Important
The public tmate servers (
ssh.tmate.io) were shut down in July 2025, so tmate no longer works out of the box. A rewrite of the server in Rust and the return of the hosted service are tracked in #336. Until then, you can run your own tmate-ssh-server and point tmate at it with thetmate-server-*options.
What is it?
Tmate is a fork of tmux. It provides an instant pairing solution.
License
tmate is built on top of tmux. tmux and tmate are BSD-licensed.
