About MCP Claude Desktop Project Demo
A FastMCP-based example MCP server for Claude Desktop and similar clients. It combines arithmetic, note management, and live exchange-rate lookup with named resources and prompt templates.
Key features
- 01Arithmetic with error handling
- 02Live currency-rate lookup
- 03Save, read, and summarize notes
- 04Named greeting and latest-note resources
- 05Note and calculation prompt templates
Use cases
- 01Run basic calculations in Claude
- 02Check rates between two currencies
- 03Record and review local notes
MCP support
FastMCP exposes tools, resources, and prompt templates for Claude Desktop or CLI clients to call.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project README📦 Project: MCP Server with Claude Desktop – Interactive Tool API Demo This project demonstrates the use of the mcp (Modular Claude Protocol) server with the FastMCP framework to create a set of programmable tools and resources. It includes a basic calculator, note-taking functionality, and real-time currency exchange rate lookup. Designed to integrate easily with Claude AI (e.g., via the Claude Desktop or CLI), it exposes tools that can be called programmatically or via natural language prompts.
🔧 Features Arithmetic Tools Add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers with error handling.
Currency Exchange Tool Fetch real-time currency conversion rates using a public API (https://api.exchangerate-api.com).
Sticky Notes Tool Save, read, and summarize notes from a local notes.txt file.
Named Resources
Greet users dynamically via greeting://{name}
Fetch latest note with notes://latest_notes
Prompt Templates
Summarize notes using Claude or other AI tools
Generate calculation prompts based on operation type
🛠 Requirements
Make sure the following tools/libraries are installed:
-
Python 3.9+
-
uv– for virtual environment and dependency management -
mcpwithcliandserverextras -
httpx– for async API calls📝 Usage Examples (via Claude) add(2, 3) → returns 5
get_exchange_rate("USD", "EUR") → fetches real-time rate
add_note("Buy milk") → appends to notes.txt
read_notes() → reads all notes
note_summary() → generates a summarization prompt
calculator_prompt(4, 2, "divide") → returns formatted result

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
