About AI Makerspace: MCP Event
AI Makerspace: MCP Event is a demonstration project showing how to build an MCP server for web search. It uses the Tavily API and runs over stdio.
Key features
- 01Web search with Tavily API
- 02stdio transport
- 03Python server example
Use cases
- 01Demonstrate an MCP web-search server
- 02Search the web through an MCP client
MCP support
The server exposes a web_search tool that accepts a query and performs web searches using the Tavily API over stdio.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

AI Makerspace: MCP Event
This project is a demonstration of the MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, which utilizes the Tavily API for web search capabilities. The server is designed to run in a standard input/output (stdio) transport mode.
Project Overview
The MCP server is set up to handle web search queries using the Tavily API. It is built with the following key components:
- TavilyClient: A client for interacting with the Tavily API to perform web searches.
Prerequisites
- Python 3.13 or higher
- A valid Tavily API key
Installation
-
Clone the repository:
git clone <repository-url> cd <repository-directory> -
Configure environment variables: Copy the
.env.sampleto.envand add your Tavily API key:TAVILY_API_KEY=your_api_key_here
Running the MCP Server
To start the MCP server, you will need to add the following to your MCP Profile in Cursor:
{
"mcpServers": {
"websearch-server": {
"command" : "uv",
"args" : ["--directory", "/PATH/TO/REPOSITORY", "run", "server.py"]
}
}
}
The server will start and listen for commands via standard input/output.
Usage
The server provides a web_search tool that can be used to search the web for information about a given query. This is achieved by calling the web_search function with the desired query string.

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
