About MCP JS Server Template
MCP JS Server Template is a minimal JavaScript starting point for developers building MCP servers for Claude Desktop. It includes standard initialization and two example tools, with guidance for extending the handlers.
Key features
- 01Standard MCP initialization
- 02`about` and `hello` tools
- 03Error handling and logging
- 04Extensible tool handlers
Use cases
- 01Starting a custom Claude Desktop MCP server
- 02Prototyping tools with the MCP SDK
MCP support
It is an MCP server template for Claude Desktop integrations. The example server exposes `about` and `hello` tools.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

Overview
This is a simplified template for creating Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers in JavaScript for integration with Claude Desktop. It provides a basic structure for developing custom MCP servers with minimal boilerplate code.
Features
- Implements standard MCP server initialization
- Provides two basic tools:
aboutandhello - Follows MCP protocol version 2024-11-05
- Uses
@modelcontextprotocol/sdkfor server implementation - Includes error handling and logging
Prerequisites
- Node.js (v16 or later)
- Claude Desktop
@modelcontextprotocol/sdknpm package
Installation
- Clone the repository
- Install dependencies:
npm install @modelcontextprotocol/sdk
Claude Desktop Configuration
Add to your Claude Desktop configuration file:
Location:
- macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json - Windows:
%APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
Configuration Example:
{
"mcpServers": {
"template-server": {
"command": "node",
"args": [
"/full/path/to/simplified-template-mcp-server.js"
],
"env": {
"NODE_OPTIONS": "--no-deprecation"
}
}
}
}
Available Tools
1. about
Returns information about the MCP server.
2. hello
Provides a greeting, with an optional name parameter.
Example Usage in Claude:
hello with name="Claude"
Extending the Template
To create your own MCP server:
- Copy this template
- Modify the
TOOLSarray - Implement custom tool handlers in
server.fallbackRequestHandler - Update server name and version
Limitations
- Minimal error handling
- No advanced security features
- Meant as a starting point for custom implementations

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
