Details

From the project README

OPTIX MCP Server

A standalone Python/FastAPI server that implements the Model Context Protocol (MCP) for the OPTIX threat intelligence platform. It exposes 28 analyst-friendly tools that AI assistants and programmatic consumers can use to query threat feeds, search documents and indicators, manage watchlists, triage IOCs, generate detection rules, trigger AI research, and produce intelligence reports — without needing to understand OPTIX's internal REST API.

Requirements

  • Python 3.11+
  • An active OPTIX installation
  • An OPTIX API key (create one in OPTIX Settings → API Keys)

Environment Variables

VariableRequiredDefaultDescription
OPTIX_API_URLNohttps://optixthreatintelligence.co.ukBase URL of the OPTIX backend. Override only when self-hosting.
MCP_HOSTNo0.0.0.0Host address the MCP server binds to
MCP_PORTNo8090Port the MCP server listens on
OPTIX_REQUEST_TIMEOUTNo30Seconds before upstream OPTIX calls time out
OPTIX_SKIP_AUTHNofalseWhen true, bypasses API key validation — allows unauthenticated tool listing (used by Glama registry inspection). Never set to true in production.

Create a .env file in the OPTIX MCP/ directory to set these, or export them as shell variables.

# Only needed if self-hosting OPTIX at a custom URL:
OPTIX_API_URL=https://your-optix-instance.example.com
MCP_PORT=8090

Running Locally

cd "OPTIX MCP"
cp .env.example .env # then edit .env with your OPTIX_API_URL
pip install -r requirements.txt
python main.py

The server starts on http://0.0.0.0:8090 by default.

  • Health check: GET http://localhost:8090/health
  • MCP SSE endpoint: GET http://localhost:8090/mcp (requires X-API-Key header)

Authentication

Every request to the MCP endpoint must include your OPTIX API key in the X-API-Key header:

X-API-Key: optix_your_api_key_here

Unauthenticated requests receive a structured 401 response:

{
  "error": "Missing API key",
  "detail": "Provide your OPTIX API key in the X-API-Key request header.",
  "docs": "See README.md for instructions on obtaining an API key."
}

      "url": "https://optixthreatintelligence.co.uk/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "X-API-Key": "optix_your_api_key_here"
      }
    }
  }
}

Alternative — local server:

      "url": "http://localhost:8090/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "X-API-Key": "optix_your_api_key_here"
      }
    }
  }
}

Credit System

Several tools consume OPTIX credits. The server enforces a pre-flight credit check before making any upstream call: if the cached balance is known to be insufficient, it returns an error immediately without deducting or attempting the operation.

After every successful credit-consuming call the server re-fetches the credit balance so that account.status always reflects the current state.

Plan Tier Requirements

OPTIX enforces plan-tier access controls on its REST API. The MCP server exposes only analyst-level endpoints — admin-only endpoints are not exposed through MCP regardless of the API key used.

The minimum OPTIX plan required for each tool depends on the underlying REST endpoint it calls:

TierDescriptionMCP Tools Available
FreeBasic read access to threat intelligencefeed.get, search.indicator, entity.get, account.status, document.get, search.documents, detection.attack_matrix, feed.headlines, feed.cards, detection.coverage_gaps, search.ai, watchlist.list, watchlist.add, watchlist.remove, ioc.triage, feedback.vote, feed.save_view, actor.profile, actor.list
IndividualFull analyst access — enrichment, detection rules, entity researchAll Free tools + ioc.context, entity.research, entity.ask, detection.rule, detection.tradecraft, incident.report, report.generate
TeamShared intelligence and TAXII — multi-analyst org featuresAll Individual tools + TAXII-related workflows (via direct API)
EnterpriseOrganisation administration and compliance reportingAll Team tools + org admin workflows (via direct API; not MCP-exposed)

Note: Admin-only endpoints (audit log, organisation member management, provider key configuration, compliance reports, and organisation overview) are never exposed through the MCP server. These require org_admin or platform_admin role and must be called via the REST API directly using an admin-scoped API key.

Checking Your Plan

To verify which tier and tools are available to your API key:

# Using the MCP server
result = await client.call_tool("account.status", {})
print(result) # Shows current plan tier and available features

Available Tools

Authentication: All tools authenticate via the X-API-Key header set in your MCP client configuration — there is no api_key tool parameter. The key is validated against the OPTIX backend on every request.

Glama Registry Inspection

When the OPTIX MCP server is listed on Glama, the registry builds a Docker image and connects to the server to detect available tools. Because Glama does not have a real OPTIX API key, authentication must be temporarily bypassed.

In the Glama server configuration, set the Placeholder parameters field to:

{"OPTIX_SKIP_AUTH": "true"}

When OPTIX_SKIP_AUTH=true the server starts normally and accepts unauthenticated MCP sessions for tool listing. Tool execution will still return an appropriate error because no real API key is present — only list_tools() succeeds, which is all Glama requires to score tool quality.

This flag has no effect in normal deployments where OPTIX_SKIP_AUTH defaults to false.

Health Endpoint

GET /health returns service status without requiring authentication:

{
  "status": "ok",
  "version": "1.0.0",
  "optix_connected": true,
  "optix_url": "https://your-optix-instance.example.com",
  "timestamp": "2024-04-19T12:00:00Z"
}

If optix_connected is false, status will be degraded and tool calls will fail until the OPTIX backend is reachable.

Error Handling

All tools return structured error messages rather than raising exceptions to the AI client:

Error typeCauseResponse
Authentication errorInvalid or missing API keyPrompt the user to check their OPTIX API key
Insufficient creditsBalance below the operation costCall account.status and wait for the reset date
Not foundEntity, document, or report does not existVerify the ID or name and try again

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
