About AEGIS Governance — six-gate decision evaluation with hash-chained audit trails (stdio via PyPI + hosted Streamable HTTP)

The AEGIS Governance PyPI package includes a Python API client and a local stdio MCP server with tools for proposal evaluation and governance records. The hosted API is currently offline, and the local server has no evaluation engine, so tools do not return evaluations at this time.

Key features

  1. 01Provides a local stdio MCP server
  2. 02Includes six governance-related tools
  3. 03Tool calls depend on the hosted API
  4. 04Currently unable to return evaluations

Use cases

  1. 01Connect an MCP client to governance tools
  2. 02Access engineering proposal evaluation endpoints
  3. 03Check the current unavailability of the service

MCP support

The local MCP server exposes six tools over stdio, but evaluation and query requests depend on the hosted API, which is currently offline. The local server does not perform evaluations.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config

"aegis": {
"command": "uvx",
"args": [

Run commanduvx aegis-governance
Environment variables to set
AEGIS_API_KEYSecretAPI key for the hosted AEGIS API. The hosted service is offline, so tool calls do not return evaluations. See https://undercurrentholdings.com/status/

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Details

From the project README

AEGIS Governance — MCP Server

Status: the hosted AEGIS service is offline (since September 2026). The hosted API and the hosted MCP endpoint (mcp.aegis.undercurrentholdings.com) are offline. The local server does not evaluate proposals itself, so no tool returns an evaluation at this time. Current status: https://undercurrentholdings.com/status/

What the package is

aegis-governance on PyPI is a Python client for the AEGIS API. It also contains a local MCP server. The package installs one console script, aegis-mcp-server. This script starts a local MCP server that uses the stdio transport. The package has no other command-line tool.

The local server has no evaluation engine. By default, the client sends all requests to the hosted AEGIS API. Sandbox mode (the mode without an API key) also uses the hosted API. While the hosted service is offline, tool calls do not return evaluations.

Install

pip install "aegis-governance[mcp]"

The [mcp] extra is necessary for aegis-mcp-server. On Python < 3.10, the extra installs nothing, and aegis-mcp-server exits with an install hint.

Local stdio MCP configuration

Claude Code

claude mcp add aegis -- aegis-mcp-server

Cursor (.cursor/mcp.json) / Windsurf / any stdio MCP client:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "aegis": { "command": "aegis-mcp-server" }
  }
}

VS Code (.vscode/mcp.json):

{
  "servers": {
    "aegis": { "type": "stdio", "command": "aegis-mcp-server" }
  }
}

Tools

tools/list from aegis-mcp-server in aegis-governance 1.4.2 returns these six tools. Without AEGIS_API_KEY, aegis_evaluate_proposal and aegis_health call the hosted API, and the other four tools return an AuthenticationError JSON result without an API call. With AEGIS_API_KEY set, all six tools call the hosted API.

The descriptions below are quoted from the server. They do not describe a service that is available now.

ToolDescription (quoted from the server)
aegis_evaluate_proposalEvaluate an engineering proposal through the AEGIS gate checks.
aegis_quick_risk_checkQuick risk threshold check without a full Bayesian evaluation.
aegis_healthCheck AEGIS API health (service status, version, components).
aegis_list_decisionsList recent governance decisions for the authenticated customer.
aegis_get_decisionFetch a specific governance decision by ID, with full gate detail.
aegis_get_usageGet the authenticated customer's evaluation usage report.

Reading the source

The aegis-governance source repository is private. To read the published source, download the source distribution (sdist) from PyPI:

pip download --no-binary :all: --no-deps "aegis-governance==1.4.2"

Or get the .tar.gz file from the PyPI release files.

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
