About spotdb
SpotDB is a lightweight, ephemeral data sandbox for LLMs and agentic workflows. It isolates data so AI agents can analyze it without direct access to production databases, with guardrails and security controls built in.
Key features
- 01Ephemeral temporary database sandboxes
- 02Data snapshots and point-in-time recovery
- 03MCP API for data access
- 04REST API for traditional integrations
- 05Guardrails that enforce data constraints
- 06Browser-based Explorer UI
Use cases
- 01Letting AI agents analyze data in an isolated environment
- 02Exploring uploaded CSV data without changing production data
MCP support
SpotDB exposes an MCP API so MCP clients such as Claude Code can query data in the sandbox.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
docker run -i --rm -e X-API-Key docker.io/aliengiraffe/spotdb:0.1.0X-API-KeySecretOptional API key for request authenticationLocal servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMESpotDB
Lightweight data sandbox for AI workflows and data exploration, enabled with guardrails and security to keep your data safe.
This project provides a lightweight, ephemeral data sandbox designed for large language models (LLMs) and agentic workflows. By providing a secure, isolated environment, it allows AI agents and scripts to analyze data without direct access to production databases. This setup prevents accidental data modification, ensures data privacy, and enforces guardrails for safe data exploration.
Features
- 🏖️ Ephemeral Data Sandbox: Create temporary databases for AI workflows and data exploration.
- 📸 Snapshot: Capture and store data snapshots, recover point-in-time data states or continue from a previous state.
- 🧠 MCP API: Access data through a Model Context Protocol for seamless integration with AI models and agentic workflows.
- ⚙️ REST API: Access data through a RESTful API for integration with traditional systems and workflows.
- 🚂 Guardrails: Enforce rules and constraints to ensure data safety and privacy.
- 🛡️ Security: Protect data from unauthorized access and modification.
Quick Start
- Tap the repository and install the package:
brew tap aliengiraffe/spaceship && \\
brew install spotdb
- Start the server:
spotdb
- Upload a CSV file:
curl -X POST \
http://localhost:8080/api/v1/upload \
-F "table_name=mytable" \
-F "has_header=true" \
-F "[email protected]"
- Query the data:
curl -X POST \
http://localhost:8080/api/v1/query \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"query": "SELECT * FROM mytable LIMIT 10"}'
- Setup Claude Code
You must have the
claudecommand installed.
Then, you can add the spotdb mcp:
claude mcp add spotdb -s user -- npx -y mcp-remote http://localhost:8081/stream
Use Explorer UI
Open the Explorer UI in your browser and upload files and query the data:
open http://localhost:8080/explorer

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
