About arXiv Search MCP Server
arXiv Search MCP Server lets MCP clients search academic papers on arXiv using natural-language queries. It supports English and Japanese queries and returns structured paper details, with a separate tool for looking up a paper by ID.
Key features
- 01Natural-language search in English and Japanese
- 02Search by keywords, authors, categories, and dates
- 03Return paper titles, authors, abstracts, and links
- 04Retrieve a paper by arXiv ID
- 05Fetch live results from the arXiv API
Use cases
- 01Find recent papers on a research topic
- 02Search for an author's publications
- 03Look up details for a known arXiv paper
MCP support
It exposes search_arxiv_papers and get_arxiv_paper tools to MCP clients, including Claude Desktop.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMEarXiv Search MCP Server
A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that enables natural language searching of arXiv academic papers. Built with Node.js and TypeScript for local execution.
Features
- Natural Language Queries: Search for papers using conversational language (English and Japanese)
- Comprehensive Search: Search by keywords, authors, categories, and date ranges
- Structured Results: Get detailed paper information including titles, authors, abstracts, and links
- MCP Protocol Compliance: Works with Claude Desktop and other MCP-compatible clients
- Error Handling: Robust error handling and retry logic for API calls
- Real-time Data: Fetches live data from arXiv API

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
