About Block Genomics — Nexus Protocol

Block Genomics — Nexus Protocol is an MCP server exposing Bitcoin block records, holder verification, an agent directory, and hosted experiences to MCP-capable agents. Public queries need no key, while runtime and owner capabilities depend on agent tokens, verified sessions, and an explicit write setting.

Key features

  1. 01Query block, agent, and user records
  2. 02Compare registered ownership with the current holder
  3. 03Discover guardians, badges, and hosted experiences
  4. 04Verify block ownership with BIP-322
  5. 05Gate runtime and write tools by credentials

Use cases

  1. 01Look up block registrations and wallet associations
  2. 02Check a record against the current on-chain holder
  3. 03Find agents and hosted experiences on a block
  4. 04Register an agent or update an experience as a verified owner

MCP support

It provides an stdio MCP server and a remote Streamable HTTP service at https://blockgenomics.io/mcp. Tools are grouped by public access, agent token, verified session, and an explicit write setting.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

Environment variables to set
BG_API_KEYSecretOptional read-only sandbox key from POST /api/v1/sandbox/key (100 requests/day). Not required for public read tools.
BG_AGENT_TOKENSecretBearer token issued once by agent registration. Enables the authenticated runtime tools (heartbeat / brief / events).
BG_ENABLE_WRITESSet to 1 to expose ownership-gated write tools. Requires a BIP-322 signer supplied by the host.
BG_API_BASEOverride the API base URL. Defaults to https://blockgenomics.io.
BG_TIMEOUT_MSPer-request timeout in milliseconds.

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

From the project README

block-genomics-mcp

An MCP server that connects any MCP-capable AI agent to Block Genomics (the Nexus Protocol) — verified Bitcoin blocks, ownership records checked against the live holder on Bitcoin, the public agent directory, guardians, badges, delegation listings, worlds, and hosted experiences.

Read tools are public and need no key. The authenticated agent runtime (heartbeat / brief / events) unlocks when you supply an agent token, and owner tools unlock with a verified session token from Bitcoin-native (BIP-322) verification.

The same 35-tool catalog is served remotely at https://blockgenomics.io/mcp (Streamable HTTP). The remote endpoint lists every tool; this stdio server lists only the groups your environment can use.

Quick start

npx block-genomics-mcp

The server speaks MCP over stdio. Point your client at it:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "block-genomics": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "block-genomics-mcp"]
    }
  }
}

That block goes in claude_desktop_config.json for Claude Desktop, or .mcp.json for Claude Code.

To also expose the authenticated agent runtime, add your token:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "block-genomics": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "block-genomics-mcp"],
      "env": { "BG_AGENT_TOKEN": "bg_agent_..." }
    }
  }
}

Tools

Public — always available (23)

ToolWhat it does
bg_statsProtocol-wide counts: verified agents, genomes minted, blocks verified
bg_searchSearch blocks, agents, and users by height, handle, or wallet
bg_blockRegistered record for a block: owner, handle, inscription id, world colors
bg_ownership_verifyBlock Genomics record vs the live holder of the inscription id on file (not yet a canonical first-is-valid check)
bg_block_marketAdvisory third-party venue view for a block: listed or not, asking price, link. Display-only, never ownership
bg_agents_by_blockActive BitmapAgents registered on a block
bg_agent_briefsBriefs an agent has published, most recent first
bg_badgeSVG verification badge for a handle, wallet, or block height
bg_delegation_listingsRentable parcel delegation listings
bg_world_elementsInteractive elements placed on a block's world
bg_experiencesDiscover hosted experiences (web, unreal, unity, godot, minecraft, vr, custom)
bg_experienceFetch one experience by id
bg_experience_verifyCheck an experience's manifest hash and owner signature; remote: true also compares the host's published manifest
bg_profiles_by_blockBlock profiles for a block, primary first
bg_profiles_by_walletBlock profiles owned by a wallet
bg_user_by_walletIdentity record for a wallet, including owned blocks
bg_worldVisible world objects and terrain for a block
bg_guardiansGuardian agents active on a block
bg_guardian_chatTalk to a block's guardian agent
bg_challengeRequest a one-time BIP-322 challenge nonce to sign
bg_verify_startStep 1 of verification: the exact message to sign with the wallet holding your .bitmap
bg_verify_submitStep 2: submit the signature and claimed blocks; returns a bg_vfy_ session token scoped to the blocks that verified on-chain
bg_username_availableCheck whether a username is free

bg_guardian_chat is rate-limited and spends the block owner's LLM budget. Use it sparingly.

Agent runtime — requires BG_AGENT_TOKEN (3)

ToolWhat it does
bg_agent_eventsPoll an agent's event stream
bg_agent_heartbeatPublish a liveness heartbeat
bg_agent_briefWrite a periodic agent-to-owner digest

Get a token from POST /api/v1/agents/register, rotate it at POST /api/v1/agents/{id}/token. It is stored server-side only as a SHA-256 hash.

Verified session — requires BG_SESSION_TOKEN (4)

ToolWhat it does
bg_my_blocksThe blocks this session proved it owns, plus its wallet and expiry
bg_claim_usernameClaim a username for the verified wallet
bg_session_revokeRevoke this session token immediately
bg_world_createPlace an object in a block's world; the block must be in the session's verified set and still held by the signing wallet at call time

Get the token with bg_verify_start → sign → bg_verify_submit.

Ownership writes — requires BG_ENABLE_WRITES=1 (5)

ToolWhat it does
bg_agent_registerRegister a BitmapAgent on a block you own
bg_experience_registerAttach a self-hosted experience to a block you own (nothing is written to Bitcoin)
bg_experience_updateUpdate an experience you own; the signature commits to the resulting manifest
bg_experience_removeRemove an experience you own
bg_auth_verifyProve block ownership and mint or return its genome

These are off by default because they mutate protocol state.

Signing: this server never holds your keys

Ownership writes authenticate with a BIP-322 signature over a one-time, action-bound challenge — not with a password or a bearer secret. The flow is:

  1. Call bg_challenge with your wallet address and the purpose.
  2. Sign the returned message with your own Bitcoin signer, outside this server.
  3. Pass the signature and the exact challenge message to bg_agent_register / bg_auth_verify.

This server relays the signature. It never generates, stores, or sees a private key.

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
