About 🧠 cdk-serverless-mcp-server

cdk-serverless-mcp-server is an example MCP server deployed with AWS CDK on AWS Lambda and exposed over HTTP through API Gateway. It serves as a cloud deployment starting point, with an example addition tool and Jest tests for local development.

Key features

  1. 01Deploy with AWS CDK
  2. 02Run as a single AWS Lambda function
  3. 03Expose an HTTP endpoint through API Gateway
  4. 04Include an example add tool
  5. 05Support local Jest testing

Use cases

  1. 01Start a cloud-hosted MCP server skeleton
  2. 02Expose an MCP server over HTTP
  3. 03Test JSON-RPC tool interactions locally

MCP support

The project provides an MCP server running on AWS Lambda, receiving HTTP POST requests at the API Gateway /mcp path. Its example server exposes an add tool.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

No install method listed yet

We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.

Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

🧠 cdk-serverless-mcp-server

A super simple Model Context Protocol (MCP) server deployed on AWS Lambda and exposed via Amazon API Gateway, deployed with AWS CDK. This skeleton is based on the awesome work of FrΓ©dΓ©ric Barthelet: which has developed a middy middleware for Model Context Protocol (MCP) server integration with AWS Lambda functions in this repo

Long story

πŸ›  Features

  • πŸͺ„ Minimal MCP server setup using @modelcontextprotocol/sdk
  • πŸš€ Deployed as a single AWS Lambda function
  • 🌐 HTTP POST endpoint exposed via API Gateway at /mcp
  • πŸ”„ Supports local development testing with jest
  • πŸ§ͺ Includes a simple example tool (add) with JSON-RPC interaction

πŸ›  Prerequisites

πŸš€ Getting Started

  1. Install dependencies:
npm install
  1. Install AWS CDK globally (if not already installed):
npm install -g aws-cdk
  1. Test Locally with jest
npm run test

🧬 Code Breakdown

This code is based on the awesome work of FrΓ©dΓ©ric Barthelet: which has developed a middy middleware for Model Context Protocol (MCP) server integration with AWS Lambda functions in this repo

src/index.js
import middy from "@middy/core";
import httpErrorHandler from "@middy/http-error-handler";
import { McpServer } from "@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/server/mcp.js";
import { z } from "zod";
import mcpMiddleware from "middy-mcp";

const server = new McpServer({
  name: "Lambda hosted MCP Server",
  version: "1.0.0",
});

server.tool("add", { a: z.number(), b: z.number() }, async ({ a, b }) => ({
  content: [{ type: "text", text: String(a + b) }],
}));

export const handler = middy()
  .use(mcpMiddleware({ server }))
  .use(httpErrorHandler());

πŸ“‘ Deploy to AWS

Just run:

npm run layer-dependencies-install # install dependencies for the layer

Then, deploy the stack:

cdk bootstrap
cdk deploy

After deployment, the MCP server will be live at the URL output by the command.

πŸ§ͺ Once deployed, test with curl requests

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
