cmd-line-executor MCP server
LocalAbout cmd-line-executor MCP server
cmd-line-executor MCP server is an experimental server for invoking command-line applications through MCP. Its single tool runs a command with arguments and returns output and status details.
Key features
- 01Run commands with arguments
- 02Return stdout and stderr
- 03Return command status code
Use cases
- 01Invoking command-line applications from an MCP client
- 02Inspecting command output and exit status
MCP support
It exposes a `run_command` tool that accepts command and argument strings, then returns stdout, stderr, status_code, and related results.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

Components
Tools
The server implements one tool:
- run_command: Runs a command line comment
- Takes "cmd" and "args" as string arguments
- Runs the command and returns stdout, stderr, status_code, etc.

On MacOS: ~/Library/Application\ Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
On Windows: %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Building and Publishing
To prepare the package for distribution:
- Sync dependencies and update lockfile:
uv sync
- Build package distributions:
uv build
This will create source and wheel distributions in the dist/ directory.
- Publish to PyPI:
uv publish
Note: You'll need to set PyPI credentials via environment variables or command flags:
- Token:
--tokenorUV_PUBLISH_TOKEN - Or username/password:
--username/UV_PUBLISH_USERNAMEand--password/UV_PUBLISH_PASSWORD
Debugging
Since MCP servers run over stdio, debugging can be challenging. For the best debugging experience, we strongly recommend using the MCP Inspector.
You can launch the MCP Inspector via npm with this command:
npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector uv --directory /Users/markus/experiments/claude-mvp/cmd-line-executor run cmd-line-executor
Upon launching, the Inspector will display a URL that you can access in your browser to begin debugging.

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
