About crossplane-mcp-server - WIP
crossplane-mcp-server is a Python MCP server, marked as a work in progress, for querying Crossplane-related resources in Kubernetes. It is intended for LLMs that need to inspect resources such as XRDs, Compositions, and ManagedResources.
Key features
- 01Query Crossplane resources in Kubernetes
- 02Work with XRDs, Compositions, and ManagedResources
- 03Python-based MCP server
Use cases
- 01Inspect Crossplane resources through an LLM
- 02Query XRDs and Compositions in a Kubernetes environment
MCP support
The server implements MCP and exposes access to Crossplane-related Kubernetes resources. The README lists planned tools for listing and retrieving Compositions and CompositeResourceDefinitions.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMEcrossplane-mcp-server - WIP
A Python server that implements Model Context Protocol(MCP) for Crossplane. It allows LLM to talk to Kubernetes and query Crossplane-related resources, such as, CompositeResourceDefinition(XRD), Composition, and ManagedResource(MR).
Usage
Using Crossplane MCP Server in vscode, add the following to mcp.json under workspace folder.
{
"inputs": [],
"servers": {
"CrossplaneServer": {
"type": "stdio",
"command": "uv",
"args": [
"--directory",
"${PATH_TO_CROSSPLANE_MCP_SERVER}/crossplane-mcp-server",
"run",
"src/server.py"
]
}
}
}
Using Crossplane MCP Server in Claude Desktop, add the following to claude_desktop_config.json.
{
"mcpServers": {
"crossplane-mcp-server": {
"command": "uv",
"args": [
"--directory",
"${PATH_TO_CROSSPLANE_MCP_SERVER}/crossplane-mcp-server",
"run",
"src/server.py"
]
}
}
}

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
