About mcp-rfc-editor

mcp-rfc-editor is an MCP server for editing RFC TXT documents with the rfc-editor Python library. It offers session-based document handling as well as tools to create, download, revise, and save RFCs.

Key features

  1. 01Load or download RFC documents
  2. 02Create and save RFC TXT files
  3. 03Edit titles, abstracts, and sections
  4. 04Set copyright and author details
  5. 05List sections and export document data

Use cases

  1. 01Download an RFC for editing
  2. 02Draft a new RFC document
  3. 03Revise sections and document metadata
  4. 04Save changes in TXT format

MCP support

The MCP server exposes tools for loading, creating, editing, and saving RFC documents. Session context retains the active document between operations.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"daedalus-mcp-rfc-editor": {
"command": "uvx",
"args": [
"mcp-rfc-editor"
]
}
}
}
Run commanduvx mcp-rfc-editor

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

mcp-rfc-editor

mcp-name: io.github.daedalus/mcp-rfc-editor

An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for editing RFC TXT documents using the rfc-editor Python library.

Installation

pip install mcp-rfc-editor

Usage

CLI
python -m mcp_rfc_editor
Programmatic
from mcp_rfc_editor import main
main()

MCP Tools

The server exposes the following tools:

  • load_rfc - Load and parse an RFC TXT file (creates session)
  • download_rfc - Download an RFC from rfc-editor by ID (creates session)
  • create_rfc - Create a new empty RFC document (creates session)
  • get_document - Get the current document from session context
  • save_rfc - Save an RFC document to TXT format
  • set_title - Set the document title
  • set_abstract - Set the document abstract
  • add_section - Add a new section
  • update_section - Update an existing section
  • delete_section - Delete a section
  • list_sections - List all sections in the document
  • set_copyright - Set copyright notice
  • set_authors - Set document authors
  • to_dict - Convert document to dictionary

Session-Based Workflow

The server maintains session context so you don't need to pass the full document object on every call:

# 1. Download an RFC - returns Session ID
result = download_rfc(rfc_id="791")
# Returns: {document..., "Session ID": "abc-123"}

# 2. Use session ID to get title (no document needed)
get_title(session_id="abc-123")

# 3. Modify and changes are persisted
set_title(session_id="abc-123", title="New Title")

Alternatively, you can always pass the full document object directly (legacy mode).

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
