About mcp-smart-proxy
mcp-smart-proxy is an MCP server gateway for connecting to upstream MCP servers, with semantic tool search and token-efficient access. Its CLI supports serving, indexing, status checks, validation, and watching configuration files for runtime updates.
Key features
- 01Gateway to upstream MCP servers
- 02Semantic tool search
- 03Token-efficient access
- 04Watch configuration files for runtime updates
- 05CLI commands for indexing, status, and validation
Use cases
- 01Providing a gateway to configured MCP servers
- 02Finding tools through semantic search
- 03Updating upstream servers from watched configuration files
- 04Checking proxy configuration and status
MCP support
Acts as an MCP server gateway to upstream servers and exposes tool search and calls. It can serve local clients over STDIO; the CLI also documents a streamable HTTP transport option.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

Install
pip install mcp-smart-proxy
Usage
from mcp_smart_proxy import ProxyConfig
config = ProxyConfig.from_file("proxy.yaml")
CLI
mcp-smart-proxy --help
mcp-smart-proxy serve --config proxy.yaml
mcp-smart-proxy serve --config proxy.yaml --watch ./servers/
mcp-smart-proxy serve --config proxy.yaml --transport streamable-http --host 0.0.0.0 --port 8000
mcp-smart-proxy index --config proxy.yaml
mcp-smart-proxy status --config proxy.yaml
mcp-smart-proxy validate --config proxy.yaml
The --watch option monitors a directory for .yaml, .yml, or .json files containing
upstream server configurations. Add, modify, or remove files to dynamically update the
available servers at runtime.
Transport Options
The --transport option supports:
stdio(default) - Standard input/output transport for local MCP clients

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
