About 🛠️ dbt MCP Server

dbt MCP Server provides a unified way to trigger dbt models and related operations. It is for teams running data tasks through JSON, CLI, or an API, and can send Slack notifications on task completion or failure.

Key features

  1. 01Trigger dbt operations with JSON
  2. 02Accept CLI and HTTP API calls
  3. 03Send Slack task-status alerts
  4. 04Compatible with Claude

Use cases

  1. 01Run dbt models
  2. 02Execute data tests through a unified request
  3. 03Receive model success or failure alerts

MCP support

It provides an MCP interface for AI tools such as Claude to trigger dbt operations.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"dbt": {
"command": "docker",
"args": [
"run",
"-i",
"--rm",
"build"
]
}
}
}
Run commanddocker run -i --rm build

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

🛠️ dbt MCP Server

This is a minimal, extensible MCP (Model Control Protocol) server to run dbt models with a unified interface.

If you like this repo, leave a ⭐️ — it means a lot!

Overview

A unified JSON-based workflow for triggering dbt models, tests, and other dbt operations, triggered via CLI, API, or an AI interface like Claude. Includes Slack notifications for task completions.

🚀 Getting Started

✅ Ready to plug into AI tools like Claude for prompt-driven automation!

Run Locally with UV
uvicorn mcp_dispatcher:app --reload --port 8000
Run with Docker
docker build -t dbt-mcp-server .
docker run -p 8000:8000 dbt-mcp-server
5. Trigger MCP from Claude (supported client)
python claude_client_example.py

📣 Slack Alerts

Set your SLACK_WEBHOOK_URL to get alerts on model success or failure.

🔌 Usage

python mcp_dispatcher.py mcp_request.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "fetch": {
      "command": "node",
      "args": [
        "{ABSOLUTE PATH TO FILE HERE}/dist/index.js"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Features

  • Run dbt models using a clean JSON spec
  • Accept CLI or HTTP API calls
  • Slack alerts for model status
  • Compatible with Claude

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
