About brain-mcp

brain-mcp is an open-source MCP server that turns an Obsidian vault into local, searchable memory for AI clients. It combines hybrid retrieval with tools to read, organize, and write notes back to the vault.

Key features

  1. 01Hybrid keyword and semantic search
  2. 02Local indexing and reranking
  3. 03Read notes, links, and projects
  4. 04Capture and edit vault notes
  5. 05OAuth scopes and call audit log

Use cases

  1. 01Give AI clients context from an Obsidian vault
  2. 02Find relevant notes across projects
  3. 03Save facts learned during conversations

MCP support

It exposes tools, resources, and prompts to MCP clients over stdio or HTTP. Clients can search and read vault content, and write notes when granted the required scope.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

"command": "npx",
"args": [

}
}
Run commandnpx -y debawho-brain-mcp

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
