MCP support
Exposes Documentero template listing, field inspection, and file generation as tools for MCP clients. This release runs over stdio and uses a Documentero API key.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
npx -y @documentero/mcpDOCUMENTERO_API_KEYSecretCompany API key from Documentero Account settingsDOCUMENTERO_BASE_URLOptional Cloud API base URL (default: https://app.documentero.com/api)Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

Notes
- Thin client of the public Cloud API (
/api/templates,/api/meta,/api/generate). Quotas and rate limits are enforced by Documentero as usual. - Do not put the API key in tool arguments — keep it in MCP env only.
- Word templates support output format:
docx/pdf; Excel templates support output format:xlsxonly. - Remote Streamable HTTP hosting (
https://mcp.documentero.com/mcp) is planned; this release is stdio only.

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
