About MCP Office Excel
MCP Office is a local, Windows-first suite of MCP servers for structured Microsoft Office file automation, aimed at developers. Its available Excel, PowerPoint, and Word packages provide read, write, formatting, validation, and export capabilities.
Key features
- 01Read and write Excel workbooks
- 02Format, validate, and export Excel files
- 03Build and edit PowerPoint presentations
- 04Assemble and check Word documents
- 05Run local MCP servers on Windows
Use cases
- 01Automate Excel workbook changes
- 02Build and export PowerPoint presentations
- 03Assemble Word documents from templates
- 04Use Office file tools from an MCP client
MCP support
Runs standalone local stdio MCP servers that expose Office file operations to compatible clients. The current available packages cover Excel, PowerPoint, and Word; MailMCP is release-pending.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
uvx mcp-officeEXCEL_ALLOWLIST_ROOTSComma-separated directory roots allowed for file access. Required — no files are accessible without this.EXCEL_ENABLE_WRITESet to 'true' to enable write operations (cell writes, sheet creation, formatting).EXCEL_ENABLE_COMSet to 'true' to activate COM-backed tools: recalculate_workbook, export_as_pdf, hydrate_template, pivot_table, and evaluate_formula(live=True). Windows-only — requires pywin32 and Microsoft Excel.EXCEL_MAX_ITEMSMaximum number of rows/items returned per call. Default: 50.Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Details
From the project READMEMCP Office
Local-first, governed MCP servers for Microsoft Office — built for developers who want to treat Office files the way they treat code.
What is this?
MCP Office is a suite of Model Context Protocol servers that expose Microsoft Office capabilities as governed, deterministic tool calls. Each server runs locally on Windows, connects to your MCP client (Claude Desktop, VS Code Copilot, or any MCP-compatible client), and gives you structured control over Office files — without an in-app AI assistant.
This is not a Copilot replacement. It is a developer-first execution layer for Office automation.
Packages
✅ Available now
| Package | What it does | Install | Tools |
|---|---|---|---|
excelmcp | Read, write, style, validate, and export Excel workbooks | pip install mcp-office | 65 |
pptmcp | Build, edit, review, and export PowerPoint presentations. Output Contract framework for machine-verifiable slide specs | pip install mcp-office | 51 |
wordmcp | Template assembly, tracked-changes support, and structural QA for Word documents | pip install mcp-office | 50 |
🚧 Coming next
| Package | Status |
|---|---|
mailmcp | Integrated into the current source distribution; Windows Outlook UAT and published-artifact verification pending |
MailMCP is now included in the repository's single mcp-office source distribution, but the currently published PyPI artifact does not yet claim MailMCP availability. See mailmcp/README.md for source validation while Windows Outlook UAT and release verification remain open.
New packages are added as they complete their proof cycle. See ROADMAP.md.
Quick start
Prerequisites
- Windows 10 or 11
- Python 3.11 or later (
python --version) - Claude Desktop or VS Code with GitHub Copilot
- Microsoft Office (Excel / PowerPoint / Word) — required for COM-backed tools (styling, PDF export, tracked-changes)
- Classic Microsoft Outlook desktop — required for MailMCP
Install
PyPI note:
excelmcpon PyPI is an unrelated third-party package. Do notpip install excelmcp— that ships you a stranger's code. The published suite package ismcp-office.
pip install mcp-office
Or clone and install the consolidated suite from source (including MailMCP and Windows COM support):
git clone https://github.com/dosev-ai/mcp-office.git
cd mcp-office
python -m venv .venv
.venv\Scripts\activate
python -m pip install -e ".[com]"
Configure Claude Desktop
Open %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json (create it if it doesn't exist) and add the servers you installed:
{
"mcpServers": {
"excel-excelmcp": {
"command": "python",
"args": ["-m", "excelmcp.server"],
"env": {
"EXCEL_ALLOWLIST_ROOTS": "C:\\path\\to\\your\\files",
"EXCEL_ENABLE_WRITE": "true"
}
},
"powerpoint-pptmcp": {
"command": "python",
"args": ["-m", "pptmcp.server"],
"env": {
"PPT_ALLOWLIST_ROOTS": "C:\\path\\to\\your\\files",
"PPT_ENABLE_WRITE": "true"
}
},
"word-wordmcp": {
"command": "python",
"args": ["-m", "wordmcp.server"],
"env": {
"WORD_ALLOWLIST_ROOTS": "C:\\path\\to\\your\\files",
"WORD_ENABLE_WRITE": "true"
}
}
}
}
Replace C:\\path\\to\\your\\files with the directory where your Office files live. Restart Claude Desktop after saving.
Verify
In Claude Desktop, send:
Call capabilities() on excel-excelmcp
Call capabilities() on powerpoint-pptmcp
Call capabilities() on word-wordmcp
Each should return a tool list (65 for Excel, 51 for PowerPoint, 50 for Word). If a server is missing, check that python resolves to the venv where you installed mcp-office.

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
