About KeyShortcuts

KeyShortcuts is a hosted MCP server for finding and checking keyboard shortcuts across operating systems and apps. Its records include source references and per-binding review status, and it does not guess platform translations.

Key features

  1. 01Search shortcuts by action or app
  2. 02Look up literal key combinations
  3. 03Compare reviewed shortcuts across platforms
  4. 04Translate bindings between Windows and macOS
  5. 05View sources and review status
  6. 06Compose custom shortcut sets

Use cases

  1. 01Find a shortcut for an app action
  2. 02Check an equivalent shortcut on another platform
  3. 03Verify a binding's source and review status
  4. 04Build a custom shortcut set

MCP support

Exposes shortcut search, lookup, comparison, translation, source metadata and set creation tools to MCP clients at `https://keyshortcuts.net/api/mcp`.

Configuration

Remote servers need no local install. Pick your client, then copy the config or install in one click.

KeyShortcuts MCP Server

A free, stateless Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for keyboard shortcuts — hosted at https://keyshortcuts.net/api/mcp. No API key, no sign-in, no rate-limit paywall for basic use.

Search 2,719 verified shortcut records across 7 platforms (Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, Android) and 45 apps (VS Code, Excel, Figma, Photoshop, Notion, Slack, Vim, IntelliJ IDEA, Cursor, and more) — or look up what a key combination does, compare across platforms, and translate bindings between Windows/macOS.

Quick start

Add to your MCP client config:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "keyshortcuts": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://keyshortcuts.net/api/mcp"
    }
  }
}
Claude Desktop / Claude Code
claude mcp add keyshortcuts --transport http https://keyshortcuts.net/api/mcp

Available tools

ToolDescription
search_shortcutsSearch action meanings and app labels
list_appsList supported apps and platforms
get_app_shortcutsGet the shortcut records for one app
lookup_shortcutLook up what a literal key combination does
compare_platformsReviewed equivalents of an action across platforms
translate_shortcutTranslate a binding between platforms (e.g. Windows → macOS)
get_sourceSource and review metadata for a binding
create_shortcut_setCompose a custom shortcut set

Every record carries source references and per-binding review status — shortcuts are facts, but which ones are confirmed for your platform matters. The server never guesses platform translations.

Verify it right now

curl -s https://keyshortcuts.net/api/mcp \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Accept: application/json, text/event-stream" \

REST API

The same dataset is available as a plain REST API (free, 60 req/min/IP):

  • GET /api/apps — list apps
  • GET /api/search?q=... — search shortcuts
  • GET /api/keys/{combination} — lookup a literal key combination
  • GET /api/compare?id=... — reviewed cross-platform equivalents
  • GET /api/translate?id=...&from=windows&to=macos — translate a binding
  • GET /api/sources/{sourceId} — source and review metadata
  • Schema: https://keyshortcuts.net/api/openapi.json

Example:

curl "https://keyshortcuts.net/api/search?q=reopen%20closed%20tab&limit=2"

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
