About nano-banana-mcp

nano-banana-mcp is an MCP server for generating and editing images with Google Gemini. It supports several Nano Banana model variants and provides tools for iterative editing and image status checks.

Key features

  1. 01Generate images from text prompts
  2. 02Edit images with optional reference images
  3. 03Continue editing the most recent image
  4. 04Choose among supported Gemini models
  5. 05Check configuration and last-image details

Use cases

  1. 01Create an image from a text description
  2. 02Modify an existing image using references
  3. 03Iteratively refine the latest generated image

MCP support

The server exposes image generation, editing, configuration, and image-information tools to MCP clients such as Claude Code and Cursor. A Gemini API key is configured for access.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"fjacquet-nano-banana": {

"args": [
"-y",

"GEMINI_API_KEY": "<GEMINI_API_KEY>"
}
}
}
}
Run commandnpx -y @fjacquet/nano-banana-mcp
Environment variables to set
GEMINI_API_KEYSecretGemini API key from Google AI Studio. Optional: it can also be set later with the configure_gemini_token tool.

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "nano-banana": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "github:fjacquet/Nano-Banana-MCP"],
      "env": {
        "GEMINI_API_KEY": "your-key-here"
      }
    }
  }
}

See docs/configuration.md for Cursor and other MCP clients.

  1. Use the tools:
Generate an image of a sunset over mountains

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
