About FreeCAD MCP
FreeCAD MCP is an MCP server that lets Claude Desktop and other MCP clients control FreeCAD for modelling. It has two parts: an addon running inside FreeCAD and an MCP server launched with uvx, suited to users who want to drive CAD work through natural language.
Key features
- 01Create and edit FreeCAD models
- 02Run Python scripts
- 03Inspect FreeCAD documents
- 04Run FEM analyses
Use cases
- 01Generating part models through chat in Claude Desktop
- 02Assisting model creation from a 2D drawing
- 03Running FEM analysis on a model
MCP support
This project is an MCP server: the uvx-launched server connects to an RPC addon inside FreeCAD and exposes FreeCAD operations to MCP clients such as Claude Desktop.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

Quick start
You need FreeCAD and uv / uvx. FreeCAD MCP has two components: an addon running inside FreeCAD and an MCP server launched by your client.
1. Install and start the FreeCAD addon
git clone https://github.com/neka-nat/freecad-mcp.git
cd freecad-mcp
Copy addon/FreeCADMCP into your FreeCAD addon directory,
then restart FreeCAD. Select the MCP Addon workbench and click
Start RPC Server in the FreeCAD MCP toolbar.
See the installation guide for platform-specific commands and screenshots.
2. Connect Claude Desktop
Add the following entry to claude_desktop_config.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"freecad": {
"command": "uvx",
"args": ["freecad-mcp"]
}
}
}
Restart Claude Desktop to load the configuration, keep FreeCAD open with its RPC
server running, and ask Claude to create a model. Connections use localhost by
default.

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
