About habari-mcp

habari-mcp is an MCP server that guides users through Kenya Gazette notices, tenders, open data, parliamentary activity, and citizen feedback channels. It points to official sources rather than mirroring live data, and labels illustrative DEMO responses for verification.

Key features

  1. 01Search guidance for Gazette notices
  2. 02Tender guidance by sector and county
  3. 03Guidance for open data
  4. 04Parliament activity tracking
  5. 05Citizen feedback channel guidance

Use cases

  1. 01Find how to search Gazette notices by date or type
  2. 02Locate tender information by sector or county
  3. 03Explore Kenya open-data categories
  4. 04Identify channels for raising civic issues

MCP support

Exposes five tools to MCP clients for guidance on Kenya civic information. Responses point to official sources; DEMO-labeled content is illustrative, not a live feed.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"gabrielmahia-habari": {
"command": "uvx",
"args": [
"habari-mcp"
]
}
}
}
Run commanduvx habari-mcp

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Why This Exists

Kenya publishes gazette notices, tenders, parliamentary activity and open data continuously, but the volume makes it effectively invisible. Accountability depends on being able to find the one notice that matters, not on everything being technically public.

Install

pip install habari-mcp

Tools (5)

  • gazette_search —
    args: search_type, date_range
  • tender_search_guide —
    args: sector, county
  • open_data_guide —
    args: data_type
  • parliament_tracker —
    args: query_type
  • citizen_feedback_channels —
    args: issue_type

Example

from habari_mcp.server import gazette_guide

result = gazette_guide()
# what the Gazette publishes, how to search, why it matters

Claude Desktop Integration

Add to claude_desktop_config.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "habari-mcp": {
      "command": "python",
      "args": ["-m", "habari_mcp.server"]
    }
  }
}

Data & Disclaimers

Pointers to official sources rather than a live mirror. For legal effect, always read the notice in the Kenya Gazette itself.

Every tool response carries a source field. Responses labelled DEMO are illustrative reference data, not a live feed — verify against the authority named in the response before acting on it.

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
