About GeoLens
GeoLens is a read-only MCP server for coding agents working with a self-hosted GeoLens spatial catalog. It supports dataset and map discovery, feature inspection, and sandboxed SQL while limiting access to the caller’s permissions.
Key features
- 01Discover datasets and maps
- 02Inspect schemas and features
- 03Run read-only sandboxed SQL
- 04Scope calls to caller access
- 05No write, ingest, or admin tools
Use cases
- 01Exploring spatial datasets during development
- 02Inspecting feature records and schemas
- 03Querying a GeoLens catalog with read-only SQL
MCP support
GeoLens exposes catalog discovery, schema and feature reading, map access, and read-only SQL to MCP clients. Calls are scoped to the caller’s access.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
uvx geolens-mcpGEOLENS_INSTANCEBase URL of the GeoLens instance, e.g. https://geolens.example.com (the /api suffix is appended automatically).GEOLENS_API_KEYSecretAPI key, sent as X-Api-Key. Omit for public-only access.GEOLENS_TOKENSecretJWT bearer token, used only when GEOLENS_API_KEY is unset.Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Details
From the project READMEgeolens-mcp
Apache-2.0 read-only Model Context Protocol server for GeoLens.
Point a coding agent (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, …) at a GeoLens instance so it can discover datasets, inspect schemas, read features and maps, and run read-only SQL from inside a dev session. It has no write, ingest or admin tools, and every call is scoped to the caller's access.
Install
pip install geolens-mcp # or: uvx geolens-mcp
The server reads GEOLENS_INSTANCE and, for non-public data, GEOLENS_API_KEY from the environment. Client setup, the tool list and the credential rules are in the MCP guide.
Develop
cd mcp
uv run --extra dev python -m pytest -v

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
