GitHub Code Explorer using Model Context Protocol
LocalAbout GitHub Code Explorer using Model Context Protocol
An example Node.js and Express project showing how to build an MCP server for GitHub code and repository search. It includes a browser interface that simulates an AI assistant using the exposed functions.
Key features
- 01Search code across GitHub repositories
- 02View repository file contents
- 03Search GitHub repositories
- 04Discover available functions
- 05Simulate an AI assistant in a browser
Use cases
- 01Learning to implement an MCP server
- 02Trying GitHub search functions through a browser
- 03Demonstrating MCP function discovery and calls
MCP support
The server exposes MCP-compatible function definitions and endpoints to list and call functions. Its functions wrap GitHub code, repository, and file-content operations.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

From the project READMEGitHub Code Explorer using Model Context Protocol
This project demonstrates how to implement the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to create a GitHub code search tool that could be used by AI assistants.
What is Model Context Protocol?
Model Context Protocol is a standardized way for AI models to interact with external tools and services. It defines:
- How functions are described to AI models
- How AI models decide which functions to call
- How parameters are structured and validated
- How results are returned in a consistent format
Features
- Search for code across GitHub repositories
- View file contents from repositories
- Search for GitHub repositories
- Function discovery endpoint
- AI assistant simulation interface
Installation
- Clone this repository
- Install dependencies:
npm install - Optional: Set up a GitHub API token as the environment variable
GH_TOKENfor higher rate limits
Usage
-
Start the server:
npm startor for development with auto-reload:
npm run dev -
Open your browser and navigate to http://localhost:3000
-
Click "Load Available Functions" to see the API capabilities
-
Type a query in the input box and press Enter to simulate an AI conversation
API Endpoints
GET /api/mcp/functions- List all available functionsPOST /api/mcp- Call a function with parameters
Implementation Details
The application consists of:
- A Node.js/Express backend that wraps the GitHub API
- A browser client that simulates an AI assistant using the API
- MCP-compatible function definitions with JSON Schema

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
