MCP support

Exposes GitHub API operations to MCP clients, including repository, issue, pull request, file, and branch management.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"github_mcp_server": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"@modelcontextprotocol/server-github"
]
}
}
}
Run commandnpx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-github

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

GitHub MCP Server

This repository demonstrates the implementation and usage of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for GitHub integration.

Overview

The GitHub MCP Server provides a standardized way to interact with GitHub's API using the Model Context Protocol. It enables seamless integration between AI models and GitHub repositories, allowing automated interactions with GitHub's features.

Features

  • GitHub API Integration
  • Authentication using Personal Access Tokens
  • Repository Management
  • Issue and Pull Request Handling
  • File Operations
  • Branch Management

Setup

  1. Install the MCP GitHub server package:
npm install @modelcontextprotocol/server-github
  1. Configure your GitHub Personal Access Token in environment variables:
export GITHUB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN=your_token_here

Usage

Start the MCP GitHub server:

npx @modelcontextprotocol/server-github

Configuration

The server can be configured through the claude_desktop_config.json file, which should include the necessary GitHub authentication tokens and server settings.

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
