About James's MCP Server

James's MCP Server provides quote and cryptocurrency-price tools for MCP clients. It can run locally over stdio or as an HTTP service for network access.

Key features

  1. 01Random motivational quotes
  2. 02Live cryptocurrency prices in USD
  3. 03Local stdio transport
  4. 04HTTP transport for network deployment

Use cases

  1. 01Requesting a motivational quote through an MCP client
  2. 02Checking a cryptocurrency's current USD price
  3. 03Running tools locally with Claude Desktop
  4. 04Connecting to a network-hosted MCP endpoint

MCP support

Exposes `get_quote` and `get_crypto_price` tools to MCP clients. It supports both local stdio and StreamableHTTP transports.

Configuration

Remote servers need no local install. Pick your client, then copy the config or install in one click.

Details

From the project README

mcp-first-server

A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server built with the official MCP SDK, available both as a local stdio server (for Claude Desktop) and as a cloud-deployed HTTP server reachable over the network.

Live demo: https://mcp-first-server.onrender.com (note: free-tier hosting, first request after inactivity may take up to ~50s to wake the instance)

Tools

  • get_quote — returns a random motivational quote.
  • get_crypto_price — fetches the live USD price of any cryptocurrency (via CoinGecko).

Two ways to run this server

  • server.js — stdio transport, for local use with Claude Desktop or any MCP client that spawns a local process.
  • server-http.js — StreamableHTTP transport wrapped in Express, for cloud/network deployment (this is what's running at the live demo URL above). Listens on process.env.PORT.

Local setup

npm install
npm start # runs server.js (stdio)
node server-http.js # or run the HTTP version locally

Try the live HTTP endpoint

curl -X POST https://mcp-first-server.onrender.com/mcp \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Accept: application/json, text/event-stream" \
  -d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/list"}'

Tech

Node.js, @modelcontextprotocol/sdk, Express, Zod for schema validation. Deployed on Render.

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
