About MCP-AppleMusic
MCP-AppleMusic is an experimental MCP server that controls Apple Music on macOS through AppleScript. It suits macOS users who want an AI assistant to handle playback and library tasks.
Key features
- 01Play, pause and skip tracks
- 02Search library tracks by name
- 03Play a specific song
- 04Create playlists
- 05Get library statistics
Use cases
- 01Controlling Apple Music playback with natural language
- 02Finding and playing a library song by name
- 03Creating themed playlists
MCP support
This project is an MCP server that exposes tools such as itunes_play, itunes_search and itunes_create_playlist to MCP clients for controlling Apple Music.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMEMCP-AppleMusic
A FastMCP server implementation for controlling Apple Music (formerly iTunes) on macOS through AppleScript commands.
Requirements
- Python 3.13+
- macOS with Apple Music app installed
- MCP library ≥1.2.1
Installation
First, ensure you have uv installed:
$ brew install uv
Then, with Claude Desktop, add the following to claude_desktop_config.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"iTunesControlServer": {
"command": "uvx",
"args": ["-p", "3.13", "-n", "mcp-applemusic"]
}
}
}
Available Commands
The following commands are available through the MCP server:
itunes_play() # Start playback
itunes_pause() # Pause playback
itunes_next() # Skip to next track
itunes_previous() # Go to previous track
itunes_search(query) # Search library for tracks
itunes_play_song(song) # Play specific song
itunes_create_playlist(name, songs) # Create new playlist

Usage
Start the server:
python server.py
Example interactions:
# Search for a song
results = itunes_search("Hey Jude")

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
