Bee Agent & Model Context Protocol with Backstage
LocalAbout Bee Agent & Model Context Protocol with Backstage
A sample MCP server and Bee Agent Framework agent for retrieving data from Backstage. It demonstrates how an agent can use tools exposed by the server to interact with a Backstage instance.
Key features
- 01Backstage data access tools
- 02Sample Bee Agent Framework agent
- 03Token-based Backstage access
Use cases
- 01Demonstrating agent access to Backstage data
- 02Prototyping MCP tools for Backstage
MCP support
The MCP server exposes tools that LLMs can use to communicate with a Backstage instance. A sample Bee Agent Framework agent demonstrates interaction with the server.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMEBee Agent & Model Context Protocol with Backstage
This repository demonstrates how to create a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that provides tools that LLMs can use to communicate with a Backstage instance. A sample Agent, built using the Bee Agent Framework, is included to demonstrate how to interact with the MCP server.
Run the Demo
Configure Backstage
Enable static, token-based, access to Backstage. This allows a client to
interact with the HTTP API using the token in an authorization header.
appConfig:
backend:
auth:
externalAccess:
- type: static
options:
token: 'notasecuretoken'
subject: mcp
Run the MCP Server
Install dependencies and prepare environment variables:
cd server
npm i
cp .env.template .env
Edit the .env file to with valid values, then start the server:
# Load variables
source .env
# Build and run the server
npm run build && npm start
The MCP server will start listening on http://localhost:8080
Run the Agent
In another terminal, install dependencies and set environment variables:
cd agent
cp .env.template .env
npm i
Run the agent:
npm run build && npm start

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
