About @f4ww4z/mcp-mysql-server

@f4ww4z/mcp-mysql-server is an MCP server for MySQL database operations, letting AI models work with MySQL through a standard interface. It suits users who want an assistant to query data and inspect table structures. Prepared statement parameters are supported.

Key features

  1. 01Connect to MySQL with automatic connection management
  2. 02Run SELECT queries with prepared statement parameters
  3. 03Run INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE statements
  4. 04List tables in the connected database
  5. 05Describe the structure of a given table

Use cases

  1. 01Letting an AI assistant query data in a MySQL database
  2. 02Letting an assistant inspect table structures before writing SQL

MCP support

The project is an MCP server exposing tools such as connect_db, query, execute, list_tables and describe_table to MCP clients. It installs via npx and is configurable for Claude Desktop and Codex.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"mysql-server": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"@smithery/cli"
]
}
}
}
Run commandnpx -y @smithery/cli

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Packages
npm@smithery/cli

Tools

No tool list yet

Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

Installation

Installing via Smithery

To install MySQL Server for Claude Desktop automatically via Smithery:

npx -y @smithery/cli install @f4ww4z/mcp-mysql-server --client claude
Manual Installation
npx @f4ww4z/mcp-mysql-server

Configuration

The server requires the following environment variables to be set in your MCP settings configuration file:

Running evals

The evals package loads an mcp client that then runs the index.ts file, so there is no need to rebuild between tests. You can load environment variables by prefixing the npx command. Full documentation can be found here.

Available Tools

1. connect_db

Establish connection to MySQL database using provided credentials.

use_mcp_tool({
  server_name: "mysql",
  tool_name: "connect_db",
  arguments: {
    host: "localhost",
    user: "your_user",
    password: "your_password",
    database: "your_database"
  }
});
2. query

Execute SELECT queries with optional prepared statement parameters.

use_mcp_tool({
  server_name: "mysql",
  tool_name: "query",
  arguments: {
    sql: "SELECT * FROM users WHERE id = ?",
    params: [1]
  }
});
3. execute

Execute INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE queries with optional prepared statement parameters.

use_mcp_tool({
  server_name: "mysql",
  tool_name: "execute",
  arguments: {
    sql: "INSERT INTO users (name, email) VALUES (?, ?)",
    params: ["John Doe", "[email protected]"]
  }
});
4. list_tables

List all tables in the connected database.

use_mcp_tool({
  server_name: "mysql",
  tool_name: "list_tables",
  arguments: {}
});
5. describe_table

Get the structure of a specific table.

use_mcp_tool({
  server_name: "mysql",
  tool_name: "describe_table",
  arguments: {
    table: "users"
  }
});

Features

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
