About Obsidian Index MCP server
Obsidian Index MCP server enables semantic search across Obsidian vaults and makes recently modified notes available to MCP clients. It is intended for people who want to retrieve and expose vault notes through an MCP connection.
Key features
- 01Semantic search across indexed notes
- 02Recently modified notes as resources
- 03Multiple vault paths
- 04Watch vault changes and update index
Use cases
- 01Find relevant notes by meaning
- 02Read recent vault notes from an MCP client
MCP support
Exposes a `search-notes` tool for semantic search and recently modified notes as Markdown resources addressed with the `obsidian://` URL scheme.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMEObsidian Index MCP server
An MCP server that provides a semantic search over an Obsidian vault and exposes recent notes as resources.
Components
Resources
The server exposes recently modified notes in your vaults as resources to MCP clients.
- Notes are addressed by an
obsidian://<VAULT_NAME>/<NOTE_PATH>URL scheme - Notes have the
text/markdownmedia type
Tools
The server implements one tool:
search-notes: Performs semantic search over indexed notes
Run the server
uv run obsidian-index mcp --vault <VAULT_PATH> --database <DATABASE_PATH> --reindex --watch
--vault: Path to the Obsidian vault (can be specified multiple times)--database: Path to the local database file (will be created if it doesn't exist)--reindex: Reindex all notes in the vault (you probably want this every time right now)--watch: Watch for changes in the vault and update the index accordingly

Building and Publishing
To prepare the package for distribution:
- Sync dependencies and update lockfile:
uv sync
- Build package distributions:
uv build
This will create source and wheel distributions in the dist/ directory.
- Publish to PyPI:
uv publish
Note: You'll need to set PyPI credentials via environment variables or command flags:
- Token:
--tokenorUV_PUBLISH_TOKEN - Or username/password:
--username/UV_PUBLISH_USERNAMEand--password/UV_PUBLISH_PASSWORD
Debugging
Since MCP servers run over stdio, debugging can be challenging. For the best debugging experience, we strongly recommend using the MCP Inspector.
You can launch the MCP Inspector via npm with this command:
npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector uv --directory <PATH_TO_PROJECT> run obsidian-index
Upon launching, the Inspector will display a URL that you can access in your browser to begin debugging.

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
