LocalAbout WORK IN PROGRESS - USE WITH CAUTION - Windows:
This work-in-progress MCP server provides PDF operations for LLMs, including merging files and extracting pages. It also offers PDF search and matching related files by text and regular expressions; file access can be restricted to configured directories.
Key features
- 01Merge multiple PDF files
- 02Merge PDFs in a specified order
- 03Extract selected pages
- 04Search PDF files
- 05Find and merge related PDFs
Use cases
- 01Combine several PDFs into one file
- 02Extract pages for review
- 03Locate PDFs related to a target document
MCP support
Exposes PDF manipulation tools to MCP clients, including merge, page extraction, search, and related-file matching. An optional allowed-directory setting limits file access.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details

MCP PDF Tools Server
An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that provides PDF manipulation tools. This server allows LLMs to perform operations like merging PDFs and extracting pages through the Model Context Protocol.
Features
- Merge multiple PDF files into a single PDF
- Merge multiple PDF files into a single PDF in user specified order
- Extract specific pages from a PDF file
- Search PDFs filesystem search or Everything search works better than this
- Find (and merge) related PDFs based on text extraction and regex pattern matching from a target input PDF
Installation
- Clone this repository
cd mcp-pdf-tools
# Create and activate virtual environment
uv venv
.venv\Scripts\activate
# Install the package
uv pip install -e .
Usage with Claude Desktop
Add this to your Claude Desktop configuration file (claude_desktop_config.json):
{
"mcpServers": {
"pdf-tools": {
"command": "uv",
"args": [
"--directory",
"PATH_TO\\mcp-pdf-tools",
"run",
"pdf-tools"
],
"env": {
"PDF_TOOLS_ALLOWED_DIRS": "PATH_TO\\shared\\pdfs"
}
}
}
}
PDF_TOOLS_ALLOWED_DIRS is an optional path list (use your OS path separator) that restricts file access for all tools. If not set, the server limits access to its current working directory.
Write tools (merge-pdfs, extract-pages, merge-pdfs-ordered) refuse to overwrite an existing output file unless overwrite: true is provided.

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
