About MCP Rust CLI server template
MCP Rust CLI server template is a starting point for building MCP command-line servers in Rust. It is aimed at developers who want to write MCP servers in Rust and builds on the rust-rpc-router JSON-RPC library. Prompts, resources and tools can be defined in code or in JSON template files.
Key features
- 01JSON-RPC routing based on rust-rpc-router
- 02Separate handler modules for prompts, resources and tools
- 03Optional JSON template files for content definitions
- 04Command-line flags to list resources, prompts and tools
Use cases
- 01Scaffolding a custom MCP server in Rust
- 02Running a local command-line MCP server in Claude Desktop
MCP support
This is an MCP server template. Launched with the --mcp flag, it exposes prompts, resources and tools to MCP clients.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open protocol that enables seamless integration between LLM applications and external data sources and tools. Whether you’re building an AI-powered IDE, enhancing a chat interface, or creating custom AI workflows, MCP provides a standardized way to connect LLMs with the context they need.
mcp-rs-template is a simple application template that demonstrates how to implement MCP CLI server in Rust.
How to use template?
- Clone the repository
- Modify project information in
Cargo.tomlandsrc/mcp/mod.rs - Modify server handlers:

- Modify
src/mcp/templates/*.jsonif you prefer to use json files for prompts, resources, and tools

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
