About Rust MCP Stdio Server Test

Rust MCP Stdio Server Test is a learning and debugging example of an MCP server written in Rust. It uses newline-delimited JSON over stdio and implements initialization, list requests, and a dummy tool call.

Key features

  1. 01Rust MCP server example
  2. 02Newline-delimited JSON over stdio
  3. 03Initialization handshake
  4. 04Tool, resource, and prompt listing
  5. 05Dummy tool call

Use cases

  1. 01Learn the basic MCP server handshake
  2. 02Test MCP list requests and a tool call
  3. 03Debug stdio communication with an MCP client

MCP support

It implements an MCP server over newline-delimited JSON stdio. MCP clients can initialize it, list tools, resources, and prompts, and invoke its dummy tool.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

No install method listed yet

We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.

No tool list yet

Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

Rust MCP Stdio Server Test

This repository contains a simple example of a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server implemented in Rust using a newline-delimited JSON stdio transport.

Status

This is currently a basic test implementation created for learning and debugging purposes. It handles the MCP initialization handshake and basic list commands (tools/list, resources/list, prompts/list) as well as a dummy tool call (tools/call).

Usage

  1. Build the server:

    cargo build

  2. Configure an MCP client (like Claude Desktop) to launch the executable found at target/debug/mcp-rust-sdk. Ensure the client uses newline-delimited JSON for stdio communication.

    For example, in claude_desktop_config.json (or similar client configuration), you might add an entry like this, replacing the command path with the absolute path to your built executable:

    {
        "mcpServers": {
            "rust_stdio_test": {
                "command": "/path/to/your/mcp-rust-sdk/target/debug/mcp-rust-sdk"
            }
            // ... other servers ...
        }
    }

    (Remember to use the correct absolute path for your system)

  3. Set the RUST_LOG environment variable (e.g., RUST_LOG=debug or RUST_LOG=trace) to control logging verbosity. Logs are written to $HOME/.screenpipe/logs/rust_stdio_test_logs/.

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
