About CoinGecko MCP

CoinGecko MCP is the official MCP server for CoinGecko crypto price and market data. It uses a Code Mode design in which the agent writes TypeScript against the SDK, executed in a sandbox, and it can run locally or as a remote server.

Key features

  1. 01Code Mode tool for TypeScript SDK calls
  2. 02Documentation search tool
  3. 03Code runs in a restricted Deno subprocess
  4. 04Streamable HTTP transport for remote use
  5. 05API keys supplied through headers or environment variables

Use cases

  1. 01Querying cryptocurrency prices and market data
  2. 02Letting an agent write code for multi-step data analysis
  3. 03Hosting the server remotely for a team

MCP support

This project is an MCP server that exposes two tools to MCP clients: a documentation search tool and a code tool that calls the CoinGecko SDK.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"coingecko-2": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"@coingecko/coingecko-mcp"
],
"env": {
"COINGECKO_PRO_API_KEY": "<COINGECKO_PRO_API_KEY>",
"COINGECKO_DEMO_API_KEY": "<COINGECKO_DEMO_API_KEY>",
"COINGECKO_ENVIRONMENT": "<COINGECKO_ENVIRONMENT>"
}
}
}
}
Run commandnpx -y @coingecko/coingecko-mcp

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Installation

Direct invocation

You can run the MCP Server directly via npx:

export COINGECKO_PRO_API_KEY="My Pro API Key"
export COINGECKO_DEMO_API_KEY="My Demo API Key"
export COINGECKO_ENVIRONMENT="pro"
npx -y @coingecko/coingecko-mcp@latest
Via MCP Client

There is a partial list of existing clients at modelcontextprotocol.io. If you already have a client, consult their documentation to install the MCP server.

For clients with a configuration JSON, it might look something like this:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "coingecko_api": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@coingecko/coingecko-mcp"],
      "env": {
        "COINGECKO_PRO_API_KEY": "My Pro API Key",
        "COINGECKO_DEMO_API_KEY": "My Demo API Key",
        "COINGECKO_ENVIRONMENT": "pro"
      }
    }
  }
}
Cursor

If you use Cursor, you can install the MCP server by using the button below. You will need to set your environment variables in Cursor's mcp.json, which can be found in Cursor Settings > Tools & MCP > New MCP Server.

VS Code

If you use MCP, you can install the MCP server by clicking the link below. You will need to set your environment variables in VS Code's mcp.json, which can be found via Command Palette > MCP: Open User Configuration.

Open VS Code

Claude Code

If you use Claude Code, you can install the MCP server by running the command below in your terminal. You will need to set your environment variables in Claude Code's .claude.json, which can be found in your home directory.

claude mcp add coingecko_coingecko_mcp_api --env COINGECKO_PRO_API_KEY="My Pro API Key" COINGECKO_DEMO_API_KEY="My Demo API Key" -- npx -y @coingecko/coingecko-mcp

Code Mode

This MCP server is built on the "Code Mode" tool scheme. In this MCP Server, your agent will write code against the TypeScript SDK, which will then be executed in a sandbox. To accomplish this, the server will expose two tools to your agent:

  • The first tool is a docs search tool, which can be used to generically query for documentation about your API/SDK.

  • The second tool is a code tool, where the agent can write code against the TypeScript SDK. The code is executed in a sandbox whose filesystem and network access are restricted to what the SDK needs — see "Where code runs" below. Then, anything the code returns or prints will be returned to the agent as the result of the tool call.

Using this scheme, agents are capable of performing very complex tasks deterministically and repeatably.

Where code runs

This server runs code locally. Each code tool call is executed in a Deno subprocess on the same machine as the MCP server, restricted to reading the server's own files and to making network requests to your API host.

Deno must be installed for the code tool to work. Install it from https://deno.land, or add it to the MCP server's dependencies with npm install deno.

Running remotely

Launching the client with --transport=http launches the server as a remote server using Streamable HTTP transport. The --port setting can choose the port it will run on, and the --socket setting allows it to run on a Unix socket.

Authorization can be provided via the following headers:

HeaderEquivalent client optionSecurity scheme
x-cg-pro-api-keyproAPIKeyproKeyAuth
x-cg-demo-api-keydemoAPIKeydemoKeyAuth

A configuration JSON for this server might look like this, assuming the server is hosted at http://localhost:3000:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "coingecko_coingecko_typescript_api": {
      "url": "http://localhost:3000",
      "headers": {
        "x-cg-pro-api-key": "My Pro API Key"
      }
    }
  }
}

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
