About MCP Server
MCP Server is a Node.js project that builds an MCP server entry point for use with MCP clients. It also documents stdio configuration and inspection with MCP Inspector.
Key features
- 01Builds to `build/index.js`
- 02Stdio client configuration
- 03MCP Inspector debugging
Use cases
- 01Building the server entry point
- 02Configuring an MCP client to launch it
- 03Inspecting client-server communication
MCP support
It is an MCP server that MCP clients can launch over stdio using the compiled `build/index.js` entry point. MCP Inspector can be used to inspect and debug communication.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

Getting Started
1. Install Dependencies
npm install
2. Build the MCP Server
npm run build
This will generate the compiled server at build/index.js.
Usage as MCP Server
After building, you can use the compiled build/index.js file as the entry point for your MCP server. For example, to configure your MCP client to use this server via stdio, use the following configuration:
"my-design-system": {
"type": "stdio",
"command": "node",
"args": [
"E:\\MCP-Servers\\design-system-mcp\\build\\index.js"
]
}
Replace the path with the actual location of your build/index.js if different.
Debugging with MCP Inspector Mode
You can debug or inspect the MCP server using the MCP Inspector. First, ensure you have the inspector installed:
npm install -g @modelcontextprotocol/inspector
Then, run the inspector in MCP inspector mode:
npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector
This will help you inspect and debug the communication between your MCP client and server.
Summary
- Install dependencies:
npm install - Build the server:
npm run build - Copy the full path to
build/index.jsand use it in your agent configuration as shown above. - Use the MCP Inspector for debugging:
npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
