About README.md
MCP File Finder Server is a lightweight local Python service that searches for files by name and returns JSON results. It is intended for tools such as Cline or other programs that need access to local filename searches.
Key features
- 01Searches local files by name
- 02Provides an HTTP search endpoint
- 03Returns matches as JSON
- 04Saves results to search_results.json
- 05Can be configured for Cline in VS Code
Use cases
- 01Finding locally stored files by filename
- 02Providing file search results to Cline
- 03Requesting filename matches through HTTP
MCP support
It is described as a local MCP-style helper, exposing an HTTP endpoint for file searches that external tools can use.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMEMCP File Finder Server
MCP File Finder Server is a small Python service for searching files by name on a local computer and returning results as JSON.
The project was created as a local MCP-style helper that can be connected to tools such as Cline in VS Code. It exposes an HTTP endpoint for search requests and saves the latest search results to search_results.json.
Features
- Runs locally on the user's computer.
- Exposes a simple HTTP search endpoint.
- Searches files by query.
- Returns results in JSON format.
- Saves search output to
search_results.json. - Can be connected to Cline in VS Code through configuration.
Installation and Running
-
Clone the repository.
git clone <repository-url> cd <repository-folder> -
Start the MCP server.
python mcp_server.py --port 8080 -
Configure Cline in VS Code.
- Open
cline_config.json. - Copy the configuration into Cline.
- Restart Cline.
- Open
Testing
Send a GET request:
curl "http://localhost:8080/search?query=example"
The server returns a JSON response with matching files.
How It Works
- Start the server.
- Send a search request through curl, a browser, or another tool.
- The server scans the local computer for matching filenames.
- Matching results are saved to
search_results.json. - The response is returned as JSON.
Purpose
The main idea is to automate local file search and make it available to external tools. The server can later be connected to a GUI, an AI assistant, or another program that needs local file search through a simple API.

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
