About MCP Server Example
A minimal MCP server example intended for use with Cursor and other MCP clients. It demonstrates building and starting the server, then configuring it in Cursor; the example describes using it to retrieve weather alerts and a forecast.
Key features
- 01Basic MCP server scaffold
- 02Editable tools in index.ts
- 03Build and start with pnpm
- 04Cursor server configuration example
- 05Weather alerts and forecast example
Use cases
- 01Trying an MCP server in Cursor
- 02Adding custom tools to a basic server
- 03Querying weather alerts and forecasts
MCP support
The project is an MCP server that can be configured in Cursor or other tools. Its example uses the server to retrieve weather alerts and a forecast.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMEMCP Server Example
This project is a very basic MCP server ready to be consumed by Cursor or other tools.
Modify index.ts and add any tools you want, or keep the default ones.
Then build the project:
pnpm run build
And run it:
pnpm run start
Now add a .cursor/mcp.json file in your project, and paste the following;
{
"mcpServers":{
"weather":{
"command": "node",
"args": ["[path]/build/index.js"]
}
}
}
Replace [path] with the absolute path to this project. Run pwd in the project folder for that. For example, in my case it is:
{
"mcpServers":{
"weather":{
"command": "node",
"args": ["/Users/ivanbtrujillo/Development/mcp-server-spike/build/index.js"]
}
}
}
Now go to "Settings" in cursor. You should be able to see the MCP server there. Enable it (click on the top right)

Now go to the chat, switch to Agent mode and select claude-3.7-sonnet as your model.
Type the following:
What is the weather in Texas?
It will use the MCP to get first the weather alerts, and then the forecast Here is an example of how the chat interface looks when querying the weather in Texas:

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
