About MCP Server Template 🛠️
A minimal TypeScript starter for building custom MCP servers, with a basic project structure and sample tool. The compiled server can be configured for Cursor or Claude Desktop.
Key features
- 01Basic TypeScript server setup
- 02Sample tool implementation
- 03Ready-to-use project structure
- 04Built with @modelcontextprotocol/sdk
Use cases
- 01Start a custom MCP server project
- 02Extend the sample tool with functionality
- 03Build and configure a server for Cursor
- 04Connect a server to Claude Desktop
MCP support
The template provides a basic MCP server structure and sample tool, which can be configured over stdio for Cursor or Claude Desktop.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

From the project READMEMCP Server Template 🛠️
A starter template for building your own Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. This template provides the basic structure and setup needed to create custom MCPs that can be used with Cursor or Claude Desktop.
Features
- Basic MCP server setup with TypeScript
- Sample tool implementation
- Ready-to-use project structure
- Built with @modelcontextprotocol/sdk

Getting Started
- Clone this template:
git clone [your-repo-url] my-mcp-server
cd my-mcp-server
- Install dependencies:
pnpm install
- Build the project:
pnpm run build
This will generate the /build/index.js file - your compiled MCP server script.
Using with Cursor
- Go to Cursor Settings -> MCP -> Add new MCP server
- Configure your MCP:
- Name: [choose your own name]
- Type: command
- Command:
node ABSOLUTE_PATH_TO_MCP_SERVER/build/index.js
Using with Claude Desktop
Add the following MCP config to your Claude Desktop configuration:
{
"mcpServers": {
"your-mcp-name": {
"command": "node",
"args": ["ABSOLUTE_PATH_TO_MCP_SERVER/build/index.js"]
}
}
}
Development
The template includes a sample tool implementation in index.ts. To create your own MCP:
- Modify the server configuration in
index.ts:
const server = new McpServer({
name: "your-mcp-name",
version: "0.0.1",
});
- Define your custom tools using the
server.tool()method:
server.tool(
"your-tool-name",
"Your tool description",
{
// Define your tool's parameters using Zod schema
parameter: z.string().describe("Parameter description"),
},
async ({ parameter }) => {
// Implement your tool's logic here
return {
content: [
{
type: "text",
text: "Your tool's response",
},
],
};
}
);
- Build and test your implementation:
npm run build

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
