Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server - Filesystem Implementation
LocalAbout Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server - Filesystem Implementation
An educational MCP server implementation in Go that exposes the local filesystem to MCP clients. It offers tools for listing, reading, writing, and deleting files, plus file and directory resources; the README cautions against production use without further security hardening.
Key features
- 01List directory contents
- 02Read and write files
- 03Delete files and directories
- 04Expose file and directory resources
- 05Basic path sanitization
Use cases
- 01Explore an educational MCP server implementation
- 02Let MCP clients perform filesystem operations
MCP support
The server exposes filesystem tools and file and directory resources to MCP clients. Its endpoints support capability discovery, tool calls, and resource loading.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

From the project READMEModel Context Protocol (MCP) Server - Filesystem Implementation
This is an educational implementation of a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server in Go using the Echo framework. The server provides access to the local filesystem through the MCP protocol.
Overview
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that enables developers to build secure, two-way connections between their data sources and AI-powered tools. This implementation demonstrates how to create an MCP server that provides access to the local filesystem.
Features
- Filesystem Provider: Provides access to the local filesystem through MCP tools and resources
- Tools:
filesystem.list: Lists the contents of a directoryfilesystem.read: Reads the contents of a filefilesystem.write: Writes content to a filefilesystem.delete: Deletes a file or directory
- Resources:
filesystem.file: Represents a file in the filesystemfilesystem.directory: Represents a directory in the filesystem
Security Considerations
This implementation includes basic path sanitization to prevent directory traversal attacks, but it is intended for educational purposes only. In a production environment, additional security measures would be necessary, such as:
- User authentication and authorization
- More robust input validation
- Rate limiting
- Audit logging
- Sandboxing
Getting Started
Prerequisites
- Go 1.24 or higher
Installation
- Clone the repository
- Install dependencies:
go mod tidy - Run the server:
go run main.go
The server will start on port 8080 by default. You can change the port by setting the PORT environment variable.
API Endpoints
GET /: Server informationPOST /v1/discover: Discover server capabilitiesPOST /v1/call-tool: Call a toolPOST /v1/load-resource: Load a resource
Example Usage
Discover Server Capabilities
curl -X POST http://localhost:8080/v1/discover
List Directory Contents
curl -X POST http://localhost:8080/v1/call-tool \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"tool_id": "filesystem.list",
"request_id": "req-123",
"params": {
"arguments": {
"path": "."
}
}
}'
Read File Contents
curl -X POST http://localhost:8080/v1/call-tool \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{
"tool_id": "filesystem.read",
"request_id": "req-123",
"params": {
"arguments": {
"path": "README.md"
}
}

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
