About MCP Servers
This Python and SymPy-based MCP server provides mathematical computation for AI assistants and other MCP clients, from basic arithmetic to symbolic math. It can run over stdio or use a hosted FastMCP version.
Key features
- 01Perform calculations with SymPy
- 02Support arithmetic and symbolic math
- 03Run over stdio
- 04Use the hosted FastMCP version
Use cases
- 01Perform calculations in an MCP client
- 02Handle symbolic mathematics tasks
MCP support
It is an MCP server that exposes SymPy-based mathematical computation to MCP clients.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMECalculator MCP Server
A Python-based Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that provides mathematical calculation capabilities using SymPy. This server enables AI assistants and other MCP clients to perform advanced mathematical computations, from basic arithmetic to symbolic mathematics.
Usage
Prerequisites
- Python 3.12 or higher
- An MCP client (e.g., Claude Desktop, VSCode with Claude extension, or any MCP-compatible application)
- Basic familiarity with MCP configuration
Add one of these configurations to your MCP client settings:
Option 1: Run from GitHub with uvx
{
"calculator": {
"type": "stdio",
"command": "uvx",
"args": [
"--from",
"git+https://github.com/James-Leslie/mcp-server-calculator",
"mcp-server-calculator"
]
}
}
Option 2: Use FastMCP hosted version
{
"calculator": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://mcp-jl-calculator.fastmcp.app/mcp"
}
}
Development
-
Clone the repository:
git clone https://github.com/James-Leslie/mcp-server-calculator cd mcp-server-calculator -
Create a virtual environment (using uv):
uv sync -
Run the server:
uv run calculator

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
