LocalAbout Model Context Protocol (MCP) Tutorial
A guide for developers learning to build and use MCP servers, covering setup with Smithery, connection to Cursor, and common troubleshooting steps.
Key features
- 01MCP fundamentals
- 02Initialize a server with Smithery
- 03Configure and start a server
- 04Connect to Cursor
- 05Troubleshoot common issues
Use cases
- 01Build an MCP server for the first time
- 02Connect a server to Cursor
- 03Diagnose server status or connection issues
MCP support
This tutorial explains how to create an MCP server with Smithery and configure Cursor to connect to it.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

What is MCP?
Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a standardized protocol that enables seamless communication between development environments (like Cursor) and AI models. It provides a structured way to share context and integrate AI capabilities into various tools and platforms.
Quick Start Guide
Prerequisites
- Cursor IDE
- Node.js and npm
- Git
Setting up MCP with Smithery
- Install Smithery
npm install -g @cursor-ai/smithery
- Create & Initialize MCP Server
mkdir my-mcp-server
cd my-mcp-server
smithery init
- Configure Server
Edit
smithery.config.js:
module.exports = {
name: "my-mcp-server",
version: "1.0.0",
tools: [
// Your tools configuration
]
};
- Start Server
smithery start
Connecting to Cursor
- Open Cursor IDE
- Access Settings
- Find "MCP Servers" section
- Add new server:
- Name: Your server name
- URL: http://localhost:3000
- Add any required authentication
Troubleshooting
Common Issues
-
Red Server Status
- Verify server is running
- Check URL and port
- Validate authentication
-
No Tools Available
- Review tool configuration
- Restart MCP server
- Update Cursor
-
Connection Issues

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
