About Mcp Wsdot
Mcp Wsdot connects MCP clients to the Washington State Department of Transportation API. Its tools provide current time and ferry route and sailing schedule information.
Key features
- 01Get the current Pacific time
- 02List available ferry routes and IDs
- 03Retrieve today's sailings by route
Use cases
- 01Find ferry routes and their identifiers
- 02Check today's sailing times for a route
- 03Ask about upcoming ferry departures
MCP support
Mcp Wsdot is an MCP server that exposes time and ferry schedule tools to MCP clients. It supports streamable HTTP, stdio, and legacy SSE transports.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

Development
Prerequisites
- For the best development experience, install bun so the MCP Inspector can be started (using
make mcp)
Building
- Please use
docker composeto run the application locally.- Docker Compose Instructions:
docker compose up -d --build && docker compose logs -f -t
- Docker Compose Instructions:
Run with docker-compose and check Grafana at http://localhost:3000 for metrics/traces.
Transports
The transport is selected with the TRANSPORT environment variable:
TRANSPORT | description |
|---|---|
streamablehttp | Default. The current MCP HTTP transport. Use this to host the server remotely (e.g. in Kubernetes). |
stdio | For local clients that launch the binary directly (Claude Desktop, the MCP Inspector). |
sse | The legacy HTTP+SSE transport. Deprecated by the MCP spec in favor of streamablehttp; kept only for older clients. |
streamablehttp and sse accept the following additional configuration:
| variable | default | description |
|---|---|---|
HTTP_PORT | 8080 | Listen port. (SSE_PORT is still honored when HTTP_PORT is unset, for backward compatibility.) |
HTTP_PATH | /mcp | Path the MCP endpoint is served on (streamablehttp only). |
MCP_AUTH_TOKEN | (unset) | When set, every MCP request must send Authorization: Bearer <token>. Unset disables auth. |
MCP_STATELESS | false | Disable session tracking so requests can be load balanced across replicas without sticky sessions. |
MCP_HEARTBEAT_INTERVAL | 30s | Keep-alive interval for idle streams (helps through proxies/ingress). Zero disables it. |
SHUTDOWN_TIMEOUT | 15s | Grace period for draining in-flight requests on SIGTERM. |
The HTTP transports also expose two unauthenticated health endpoints for
Kubernetes probes: GET /healthz (liveness) and GET /readyz (readiness).
Hosting remotely (Kubernetes)
To host this server in a cluster for a remote client to consume, run the
container with TRANSPORT=streamablehttp (the default) and a bearer token:
docker run -p 8080:8080 \
-e WSDOT_API_KEY=<your-key> \
-e TRANSPORT=streamablehttp \
-e MCP_AUTH_TOKEN=<a-long-random-token> \
ghcr.io/michaelpeterswa/mcp-wsdot:latest
A client then connects to http://<host>:8080/mcp over the streamable HTTP
transport, sending the token as an Authorization: Bearer header. For example,
an OpenClaw remote MCP server entry:
{
"mcpServers": {
"wsdot": {
"transport": "streamable-http",
"url": "https://wsdot.example.com/mcp",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer <a-long-random-token>" }
}
}
}
For deployment guidance — probe paths, ports, and the full environment
variable reference — see the tables above. The container listens on :8080
(MCP) and :8081 (Prometheus metrics, when METRICS_ENABLED=true), runs as a
non-root user, and drains gracefully on SIGTERM.
Current Tools
| tool | description |
|---|---|
get_current_time | gets the current time in the PDT/PST timezone |
get_route_schedules | gets the names and route id's for available ferry routes |
get_schedules_today_by_route_id | gets the sailing times for a route by route id |
MacOS Binary Notes
If you download the binary from the releases page on MacOS, you will need to exempt it from the quarantine security warnings. To do that, run the following command:
xattr -rd com.apple.quarantine <path-to-binary>

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
