About mailpal

MailPal is a VS Code API client for developers who build and test HTTP requests. Its bundled MCP server lets AI agents list and run saved requests, and create them with Pro.

Key features

  1. 01Build HTTP requests and inspect responses
  2. 02Use collection variables and secret storage
  3. 03Keep unlimited local request history
  4. 04Import and export API definitions
  5. 05Run per-request assertions
  6. 06Let agents list, run, and create requests

Use cases

  1. 01Organize reusable requests by collection
  2. 02Resend a request from local history
  3. 03Check responses with request assertions
  4. 04Use an AI agent to run saved requests

MCP support

MailPal bundles an MCP server that registers with VS Code agent mode. MCP clients can list and run requests, and Pro enables request creation; a standalone npm package is also available.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"michaelyousrie-mailpal": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"mailpal-mcp"
],
"env": {
"MAILPAL_WORKSPACE": "<MAILPAL_WORKSPACE>",
"MAILPAL_HISTORY_DIR": "<MAILPAL_HISTORY_DIR>"
}
}
}
}
Run commandnpx -y mailpal-mcp
Environment variables to set
MAILPAL_WORKSPACEFolder containing the .mailpal collections directory
MAILPAL_HISTORY_DIRWhere run history is written (default ~/.mailpal/history)

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

MailPal

The honest API client for VS Code.
Collections, variables, unlimited history, an MCP server for AI agents, and a free tier that stays free.

Install from the VS Code Marketplace

MailPal request panel

Why MailPal exists

The most popular REST client for VS Code has 7.4 million installs and a 2.5 star rating, because its free tier slowly moved everything, including your own request history, behind a paywall.

MailPal makes the opposite promise, and treats it like a contract:

  • The free tier is fully usable for a single user, forever.
  • Unlimited requests, unlimited collections, unlimited local history.
  • Pro adds new value only. It never gates access to your own data.
  • If a license lapses, Pro features stop. Everything else keeps working.

Highlights

  • Full request builder with a Postman-style editor: auto-growing key/value rows, header autocomplete, color-coded JSON editing with format and validation
  • Auto headers surfaced, so you see and control everything sent on the wire
  • Syntax-highlighted responses (JSON and XML), HTML raw/preview toggle, resizable request/response split
  • Per-collection variables with {{VAR}} placeholders; secret values live in your OS keychain, never in files
  • Unlimited local history with one-click re-send
  • Import Postman v2.1, Thunder Client, OpenAPI 3.x, and curl; export Postman and curl
  • Assertions per request with pass/fail on every send
  • A bundled MCP server, registered with VS Code agent mode automatically, so AI agents can list, run, and (with Pro) create requests

For AI agents (MCP)

The MCP server also ships standalone on npm as mailpal-mcp:

claude mcp add mailpal -- npx -y mailpal-mcp

Works with any MCP client (Cursor, Claude Desktop, and friends) via npx -y mailpal-mcp.

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
