About Mikrotik Mcp

MikroTik MCP is an MCP server that bridges AI assistants and MikroTik RouterOS devices. Assistants can manage VLANs, firewall rules and DNS settings through natural language requests. Since version 0.14.0, it can also manage multiple devices through an inventory.

Key features

  1. 01Natural language control of MikroTik routers
  2. 02VLAN management
  3. 03Firewall rule configuration
  4. 04DNS settings management
  5. 05Multi-device inventory support

Use cases

  1. 01Letting an AI assistant query or change RouterOS configuration
  2. 02Managing a fleet of MikroTik devices from one inventory

MCP support

This project is an MCP server that exposes RouterOS device operations to MCP clients.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

Environment variables to set
MIKROTIK_HOSTIP address or hostname of the MikroTik router (single-device mode; default: 127.0.0.1). Not needed when an inventory is configured.
MIKROTIK_USERNAMESSH username for the MikroTik router (single-device mode; default: admin)
MIKROTIK_PASSWORDSecretSSH password for the MikroTik router (single-device mode)
MIKROTIK_PORTSSH port of the MikroTik router (single-device mode; default: 22)
MIKROTIK_KEY_FILENAMESecretPath to SSH private key file for key-based authentication (single-device mode)
MIKROTIK_READ_ONLYWhen true, expose only tools that do not modify RouterOS or its file store. Use a read-only RouterOS account as defence in depth.
MIKROTIK_SENSITIVE_HIDINGWhen true, redact recognized credentials and private key material from tool results, MCP notifications, and logs, and omit tools that return opaque sensitive payloads.
MIKROTIK_INVENTORY_FILEPath to a YAML file listing multiple MikroTik devices (title, host, port, username, password, key_filename, tags, region). See docs/reference/inventory.
MIKROTIK_INVENTORYSecretInline multi-device inventory as a YAML (or JSON) list; takes precedence over MIKROTIK_INVENTORY_FILE and the single-device variables. Holds credentials.

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Overview

MikroTik MCP provides a bridge between AI assistants and MikroTik RouterOS devices. It allows AI assistants to interact with MikroTik routers through natural language requests, executing commands like managing VLANs, configuring firewall rules, handling DNS settings, and more.

Inventory

Note

Since MikroTik MCP version 0.14.0, the MikroTik MCP will allow you to manage multiple MikroTik devices within your fleet structure. The following video simply shows how to use the inventory of MikroTik devices to let LLMs talk with your MikroTik devices.

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
