About zerosmtp

zerosmtp is an MCP server for troubleshooting SMTP relay use with printers, scanners, and legacy apps that cannot use OAuth 2.0. It explains errors, checks device OAuth support, provides relay settings with limits, and tests connectivity from the local machine.

Key features

  1. 01SMTP error explanations
  2. 02Vendor-stated OAuth firmware status
  3. 03Relay settings and usage limits
  4. 04Local TCP and TLS reachability check

Use cases

  1. 01Diagnosing SMTP errors from a printer
  2. 02Checking a device's OAuth firmware status
  3. 03Reviewing relay connection details and limits
  4. 04Testing whether port 587 is reachable

MCP support

It exposes four SMTP support tools to MCP clients: error lookup, device OAuth checks, relay settings, and a local connectivity test. The test opens a TCP connection and TLS handshake, then disconnects without sending credentials or mail.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"msgwing-zerosmtp": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"zerosmtp-mcp"
]
}
}
}
Run commandnpx -y zerosmtp-mcp

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
