About Multi-Cluster MCP server

Multi-Cluster MCP server is a gateway for GenAI systems to manage and observe Kubernetes clusters through Open Cluster Management. It can retrieve resources from the hub and managed clusters and connect to managed clusters for resource access.

Key features

  1. 01Retrieve hub cluster resources
  2. 02Retrieve managed cluster resources
  3. 03Connect to managed clusters using ClusterRole
  4. 04Access Kubernetes resources across clusters
  5. 05Retrieve metrics, logs, and alerts from integrated clusters

Use cases

  1. 01Inspect resources in the hub cluster
  2. 02Check resources in managed clusters
  3. 03Access resources across Kubernetes clusters
  4. 04Review metrics, logs, or alerts from integrated clusters

MCP support

This MCP server exposes cross-cluster Kubernetes resource access tools to GenAI systems. Prompt templates and MCP resources are described as planned features in the README.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"multicluster": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"multicluster-mcp-server"
]
}
}
}
Run commandnpx -y multicluster-mcp-server

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Open Cluster Management MCP Server

The OCM MCP Server provides a robust gateway for Generative AI (GenAI) systems to interact with multiple Kubernetes clusters through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). It facilitates comprehensive operations on Kubernetes resources, streamlined multi-cluster management, and delivered interactive cluster observability.

🚀 Features

🛠️ MCP Tools - Kubernetes Cluster Awareness
  • ✅ Retrieve resources from the hub cluster (current context)

  • ✅ Retrieve resources from the managed clusters

  • ✅ Connect to a managed cluster using a specified ClusterRole

  • ✅ Access resources across multiple Kubernetes clusters(via Open Cluster Management)

  • 🔄 Retrieve and analyze metrics, logs, and alerts from integrated clusters

  • ❌ Interact with multi-cluster APIs, including Managed Clusters, Policies, Add-ons, and more

📦 Prompt Templates for Open Cluster Management (Planning)
  • Provide reusable prompt templates tailored for OCM tasks, streamlining agent interaction and automation
📚 MCP Resources for Open Cluster Management (Planning)
  • Reference official OCM documentation and related resources to support development and integration
📌 How to Use

Configure the server using the following snippet:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "multicluster-mcp-server": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "multicluster-mcp-server@latest"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Note: Ensure kubectl is installed. By default, the tool uses the KUBECONFIG environment variable to access the cluster. In a multi-cluster setup, it treats the configured cluster as the hub cluster, accessing others through it.

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
