nimistu MCP — Estonian Business Register for AI assistants

smithery badge

Connect any MCP-compatible AI assistant (Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT, and more) to the Estonian Business Register (Äriregister) and related open data. Ask about any Estonian company, person, trademark, or activity sector in plain language — free, no API key, read-only — with every answer traceable to its source.

Powered by nimistu.ee, a free, ad-free public register that aggregates 60+ official Estonian open-data sources, each field carrying its source and last-update date.

  • Endpoint (Streamable HTTP): https://nimistu.ee/api/mcp
  • Free — no API key, no signup, read-only
  • Bilingual — Estonian and English
  • Traceable — every answer is source- and date-stamped

Quick start

Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport http nimistu https://nimistu.ee/api/mcp
Cursor

Add to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (global) or .cursor/mcp.json (project):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "nimistu": {
      "url": "https://nimistu.ee/api/mcp"
    }
  }
}
Claude Desktop and other clients
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "nimistu": {
      "url": "https://nimistu.ee/api/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Stdio-only clients can bridge via mcp-remote:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "nimistu": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "mcp-remote", "https://nimistu.ee/api/mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Transports: Streamable HTTP at https://nimistu.ee/api/mcp (recommended) · SSE at https://nimistu.ee/api/sse.

What you can ask

You talk to it in natural language — you don't need to know table names or tool details.

  • Tell me about an Estonian OÜ — owners, board, financials
  • Which companies is a given person connected to?
  • What happened in the Estonian Business Register today?
  • Top 10 taxpayers and employers in Estonia
  • Find trademarks containing a word — and who owns them
  • How many retail companies (EMTAK 47.8) are there, and where?
  • Compare the 2024 financials of three companies

Capabilities

Ten tools over the full nimistu.ee dataset:

CapabilityWhat it covers
Company profilestatus, address, activity (EMTAK), VAT, employees, financials, tax debt, board (with appointment dates), owners, trademarks
Annual reportsevery filed majandusaasta aruanne: revenue, profit, employees, equity, assets, liabilities, labour cost, plus computed ratios and the EMTAK sector median
Ownership structuresubsidiaries, associates, foreign parent, group structure
Person & connectionsa person's current and former ties to Estonian companies (board, shareholder, representative)
Fresh registry eventswhat changed in the Estonian Business Register today
Rankingscurated top lists — taxpayers, employers, procurement winners, MPs in business, and more
Trademark searchEUIPO trademarks by text, with their owners
Sector lookupcompanies by EMTAK activity code, with counts and locations
EMTAK classificationresolve and explain Estonian activity codes

What it does not cover

Worth knowing before you rely on a negative answer:

  • Registry entry history. Company profiles are current state only — no kanded, no määrused, no pending menetlused. An answer about a company is about today, and will not mention an ongoing proceeding.
  • Beneficial owners. Estonia's FIU withdrew public access to the beneficial owner register on 10 July 2026 following the CJEU ruling, so this server no longer returns them.
  • Court decisions and public-authority documents. Separate corpora, served by lahend.ee and dokumendiregister.ee respectively.
  • Real-time data. Sources refresh on their own cadences, mostly nightly. get_company returns dataAsOf so you can see how stale an answer is rather than having to assume.

Data sources and attribution

nimistu aggregates 60+ official sources — Äriregister (RIK), the Estonian Tax and Customs Board (EMTA), EUIPO, public-procurement registers, sanctions lists, and more. Each field shows its source and last-update date.

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
