About Nutritionix_mcp
Nutritionix_mcp is a prototype chat application for logging meals in natural language and viewing calorie and macronutrient breakdowns. It combines a Nutritionix-backed MCP server with a chat interface and configurable Ollama model orchestration.
Key features
- 01Log meals in natural language
- 02Look up nutrients through Nutritionix
- 03Convert regional measurement units
- 04Track calories, protein, carbs, and fats
- 05Swap Ollama models
Use cases
- 01Record a meal by describing it in chat
- 02Check calories and macros for logged food
MCP support
Its FastMCP server exposes Nutritionix tools for the application to call when parsing foods and retrieving nutrient information.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.
We haven’t collected a package or remote endpoint for this server. Follow the instructions in the project README.
Tools
Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.
Details
From the project READMEProject Overview
Nutritionix-MCP Chat is a prototype chat application that lets users log meals in natural language. It parses food items via an MCP server backed by the Nutritionix API and returns detailed calorie and macronutrient breakdowns. Core technologies:
- FastAPI backend with WebSocket/chat endpoints
- FastMCP server exposing Nutritionix tools
- LangChain-Ollama orchestrator for tool‐calling and reasoning
- Google Mesop frontend for a lightweight chat UI
Features
- Natural-language meal logging (“I had 1 katori dahi and 2 chapatis”)
- Automatic tool-calling to Nutritionix’s natural nutrients API
- Regional unit conversion (e.g. ounces vs. litres via
alt_measures) - Macro tracking: calories, protein, carbs, fats
- Modular LLM orchestration: swap Ollama models via
llm_provider.py - Lightweight Python UI using Mesop’s
mel.chat

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
