About OpenRPC MCP Server
OpenRPC MCP Server is an MCP server that provides JSON-RPC calls through the OpenRPC specification. It is aimed at developers who want an AI client to discover and call methods on JSON-RPC services.
Key features
- 01Calls arbitrary JSON-RPC methods
- 02Takes server URL, method name and parameters
- 03Lists methods using the rpc.discover specification
- 04Returns results formatted as JSON
Use cases
- 01Letting an AI client explore methods offered by a JSON-RPC service
- 02Sending test calls to a JSON-RPC service and reviewing results
MCP support
The project runs as an MCP server and exposes two tools, rpc_call and rpc_discover, to MCP clients.
Configuration
Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

Features
Tools
rpc_call- Call arbitrary JSON-RPC methods- Specify server URL, method name, and parameters
- Returns JSON-formatted results
rpc_discover- Discover available JSON-RPC methods- Uses OpenRPC's
rpc.discoverspecification - Lists all methods on a given server
- Uses OpenRPC's
Development
Install dependencies:
npm install
Build the server:
npm run build
For development with auto-rebuild:
npm run watch
Installation
To use with Claude Desktop, add the server config:
On MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
On Windows: %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
{
"mcpServers": {
"openrpc": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "openrpc-mcp-server"]
}
}
}
Debugging
Since MCP servers communicate over stdio, debugging can be challenging. We recommend using the MCP Inspector:
npm run inspector
The Inspector will provide a URL to access debugging tools in your browser.

New to MCP?
From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.
An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
