About osm-mcp-puca

osm-mcp-puca is an MCP server that provides OpenStreetMap-related tools for LLM chatbots. Its tools cover address and coordinate lookup, distances, and local points of interest, and it can be paired with a púca web UI.

Key features

  1. 01Address and coordinate lookup
  2. 02Distance calculations
  3. 03Search for local amenities
  4. 04Overpass query results
  5. 05Optional púca web UI

Use cases

  1. 01Finding nearby parking or toilets
  2. 02Looking up an address from coordinates
  3. 03Checking distance between addresses
  4. 04Querying OpenStreetMap data

MCP support

It exposes OpenStreetMap-related tools to MCP clients, including address lookup, distance calculations, amenity searches, and Overpass results. The README describes integration with MCP-capable clients.

Configuration

Local server config is the same for every client. Copy it into your client’s MCP config file.

mcp.json · Universal config
{
"mcpServers": {
"osm-mcp-puca": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"mcp-remote"
]
}
}
}
Run commandnpx -y mcp-remote

Local servers need a runtime on your machine (e.g. Node.js 18+). Config file locations differ by client; see your client’s docs.

Local servers expose tools only once running on your machine, and the maintainer has not provided a tool list.

An MCP server for use with LLM chatbots providing tools related to OpenStreetMap

Usage

This MCP server can be integrated with your client that supports MCP. Púca UI Screenshot

Docker

The docker-compose.yaml file included will run both the púca UI and MCP server so that you can enter queries into the UI. To do so you will need to add your own OpenAI API Key in the .env file then start the containers with:

docker compose up -d

Check the logs for any issues and visit the web interface at http://your.ip.address:3301

Pydantic AI

See the example file client.py for how to use this MCP server with Python's pydantic_ai

Claude

Anthropic's Claude supports adding MCP servers if you edit the file:

vi ~/Library/Application\ Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

adding the following but amending the URL:

{
    "mcpServers": {
      "puca": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": [
            "mcp-remote",
            "http://192.168.1.40:3300/sse"
          ]
        }
    }
}

Tools

Below is a list of the tools made available via the MCP server:

  • get_coordinates_for_address
  • get_address_by_coordinates
  • get_defibrillators
  • get_distance_between_addresses
  • get_distance_between_coords
  • get_parking
  • get_toilets
  • get_post_offices
  • get_cafes
  • get_fast_food_places
  • get_irish_street_names

New to MCP?

From what the protocol is to installing your first server, these answers cover most first questions.

An open protocol that defines how AI applications connect to external tools and data in a uniform way. Clients talk to the model; MCP servers provide tools, resources and prompt templates. They exchange standard messages, so one server can be reused by many clients.
